For the last month I was a bit stacked with this triangle pattern and I did a few things using it.

One of them is my latest pattern, Deity Wall Hanger which is a cute project to make if you have some left over yarn and also you can make it to exercise the stitch pattern for this Cleopatra Top

If you feel confident enough to start and make this top first, it’s Ok also, because it’s not that difficult and I think I covered in this pattern everything you will need 🙂

At first I wanted to name it “Blue Sun” Top and I was stick with this name until I saw the final photos. The Top reminds me of Pharaon’s wear and this Cleopatra name came into my head almost instant. So, I went with it and hope you will like it 🙂

I designed a lot of tops this summer, but I think this will be the last one. I already start working on some sweaters and cardigans and slowly I am getting into autumn mood at least with my work because here in Netherlands the summer just begun and we are facing some unusual hot days.

But anyways, I really like this top and I hope you will like it too. So, let’s see what materials we will need and how to make this top

Materials you will need

  • Yarn
    • Category 1 ( Fingering, super fine)
  • Crochet Hook
    • 3.5 mm
  • You will need a yarn needle for wave in ends
  • Scissors
  • 4 stitch markers

 Pattern notes

This pattern requires techniques as single crochet, single crochet decrease, half double crochet and chain stitches.

The Top is worked top-down with a round yoke. First we will work the cape and then divide it into sleeves and body. The yoke is worked in 2 parts: first the triangles pattern and then a few more rounds in half double crochet mesh stitch are worked to complete the yoke depth.

This Cleopatra Top is designed with short sleeves and waist length, but it can be easily adjusted and make it with longer sleeves or longer length, just by working more rounds.

The top has a closer fit with a positive ease of about 2 cm around bust circumference.

The pattern is available in 6 sizes, from Small to 3 X Large and is written in US terms

Final measurements of the Cleopatra Top are listed below.

*all measurements are taken after blocking

About the stitch pattern.

For the cape of the Cleopatra Top we will use 2 stitch patterns. First part is worked in triangle stitch pattern and each triangle is worked individual. After completing 3 rounds of triangles, the rest of the yoke is worked in a mesh stitch pattern using half double crochet stitches and chain stitches. With each next round the half double crochet stitches are worked in the chain 1 space.

The main body part is worked in the same mesh stitch and at the end of the body 3 rounds of triangles are added.

Abbreviations used in this pattern

  • Ch – chain
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Sc2tog – 2 sc worked together: insert the hook in the next available stitch, yarn over and pull out a loop, insert th hook in the next available stitch yarn over and pull out a loop, yarn over and pull the yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.
  • Sp – space
  • Ss – slip stitch
  • St(s) – stitch(es)

Gauge

  • 10 spaces (windows) = 10 cm
  • 13 rows = 10 cm

*the gauge is measured after blocking in the hdc mesh stitch pattern

Pattern notes

We are working in rounds, ss at the end of each round

2 ch at the beginning of each hdc mesh stitch pattern counts as 1st hdc.

1 ch at the beginning of sc doesn’t count as first st.

When changing the color, finish the last stitch with the next color you want to use.

For all sizes the starting chain has the same number of stitches. You can adjust this if you want a bigger or smaller neck line by working more or less stitches.

*you will have to start with a multiple of 5 sts and if you change the number of stitches for the foundation chain this will affect the stitch count.

Next, before starting with the separating round, let’s summarize how many 1ch – spaces you will have at the end of the yoke for each size:

2XL

3XL

Ch spaces 154 168 184 198 220 242

Next, use stitch markers to mark the stitches for sleeves and body.

You will have to count from where your yarn is, and start counting the back side stitches.

Count the 1 ch spaces.

In the table below you will find how many ch-spaces you will have for each section, front, back and sleeve. The numbers are for one single section and you will have to count the same number of sts for the opposite side.

Front/Back 41 45 49 53 59 65
Sleeves 36 39 43 46 51 56

Note

If the sleeves are too wide for your taste you can let more ch spaces for back and front and leave less chain spaces for the sleeves.

Separating round

For all sizes

Start the round and usual, and work in the same mesh stitch pattern the sts for the back side, ch 6, skip the sts for the sleeve, work the stitch pattern for the front panel, ch 6, skip the sts for the second sleeve and join with  ss with 2nd st of the starting ch.

Body

for all sizes

R1| – R18| Repeat R10 and R11 of the yoke.

Note

On the armpit chain you will have to work the mesh st like 1 hdc ch 1, skip 1. You will end up with 3 ch spaces on the armpit ch.

You can work as many rounds as you wish to get to the desired length.

When calculate the length take into consideration that the body section of the top is finished with 3 rounds of triangles which measure approximate 10 cm.

After finishing the first part of the body in the mesh stitch we will have to change the color to Pastel Green and make a base round for the triangles.

Counting the sts this time, you will have in total for the body.

The next 3 rounds of triangles will be made with triangles with a base of 7 sts. So, we will need a multiple of 7 sts and we need to adjust the total number of sts that we have after finishing the first part of the body.
