Fall Colors Dress

Fall Colors Dress is a new crocheted garment that I will wear it with pleasure.

Every time I design a new crocheted item, I’m thinking on something I would like to wear. So, sorry if we didn’t share the same taste and fill free to use the contact form for any suggestions on what you will like me to design, because I would love to make things also for you, not only for me ???

The idea of this Fall Colors Dress, came to me while I was working on the Bat Wings Sweater.

I loved the shape and how easy is to make it. So, I was thinking that, maybe, this season we will see a lot of sweaters and I wanted something else.

About the design

The design of the Fall Colors Dress is very simple.

First we will work the top part, which is the same design and the same pattern as for the Bat Wings Sweater.

Then, after finishing the top part, we will start the skirt, working in rounds, starting at the bottom of the top part.

So basically we will do a sweater and then add the skirt.

Pretty simple, isn’t’ it?

Now, about the materials I used and some suggestions.

I used Scheepjes Whirlette, which is a 4 ply, fingering yarn. But, since I wanted to obtain a beautiful degrade, I worked with 2 strands of yarn.

Working with 2 strands of yarn, I obtain approximately the same weight as a DK, Worsted Yarn. That means that you will have a lot of option to make this Fall Colors Dress.

I worked with a 5 mm (H US Size) crochet hook.

You will also need 2 stitch markers, Scissors and a tapestry needle.

About the amount of yarn you will need.

You will need in total :

Size S – 1620 m / 1770 yds

M – 1760 m / 1920 yds

L – 1900 m / 2079 yds

XL – 2000 m / 2180 yds

XXL – 2130 m / 2320 yds

I calculated the yarn taking in consideration 2 strand of yarn. So basically I bought twice more yarn than the length listed above.

To be more specific, for size S, I used 2.5 spheres of Scheepjes Whirlette Chocolate, 2 in color Banan, 1.6 in color Mango and 1 in color Mint.

How I used the colors

I started with 2 strands in color Chocolate, then when I finished the number of rows with this color, I cut 1 strand of chocolate and joined one strand of Mango.

Then I added Banan, working with one strand of mango, one of banan, and the last color was with one strand of Banan, one strand of Mint. So I had in total 4 colors ( obtained with 2 strands of yarn)

I divided the total number of rows by 4 ( the number of shades) and the result was the number of rows worked with each shade.

But feel free to choose your colors as you wish.

So, the pattern is available for sizes from S to XXL and is wrote in US (continental terms).

As I said we will start with the top part, which is the same pattern as for the Bat Wings Sweater.

Abbreviations used in this pattern

Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – half double crochet
Dc – double crochet
FPDc – Front post double crochet
BPDc – Back Post double crochet
St (s) – stitch (es)
Inc – increase ( 2 hdc in the same st)
Dec – decrease ( sc2tog – 2 single crochet worked together)

Gauge

15 hdc = 10 cm (4″)

11 rows = 10 cm (4″)

The Final measurement of the top part are listed in the diagram bellow. The skirt will have the circumference of the bottom of the sweater and in length is up to you, depending on how long or short you want the Fall Colors Dress to be.

Make the foundation chain (you can also start with a foundation double crochet if you want)

S – 76 sts
M – 90
L – 105
XL – 120
XXL – 135

the top part of the Fall Colors Dress is oversized, so it should fit bigger hips, but if you know that you have bigger hips, measure your hips circumference, divide the length in half, add a couple of inches ( 5 cm) and this will be the starting length.

Row 1

1 Hdc in each st to the end of the row. Ch 2 and turn.

For size S, repeat this row 4 more times (5 rows in total)

M – repeat row 1, 6 more times ( 7 rows)

L, XL, XXL – repeat row 1, 7 more times (8 rows)

Row 6 (8, 9,9,9)

1 inc in the first st (2 hdc in the first st), 1 hdc in each stitch to the last one, 1 inc in the last st. Ch 2 and turn.

Rows 7 – 44 (9 – 44, 10 – 44, 10 – 44, 10 – 44)

I worked with each color 14 rows.

Repeat row 6 (8, 9,9,9)

After 44 rows you will have:

S – 154 sts

M – 164

L – 177

XL – 192

XXL – 207

Starting with the next row we will continue working straight without increasing:

S – 11 rows
M – 13
L – 14
XL – 15
XXL – 16

Now it’s time to let a space for the neck. On this step you will need 2 stitch markers or 2 strand of a different color yarn.

For the neck we will mark in the middle:

S – 36 sts ( 59 sts left on each side)
M – 38 sts ( 63 sts left on each side)
L – 41 sts ( 68 sts left on each side)
XL – 44 sts (74 sts left on each side)
XXL – 47 sts ( 80 sts left on each side)

Row 56 (56, 58, 59, 60)

1 hdc in each sts to the first stitch marker ( make 1 hdc in the stitch marked too), ch 36 (38, 41, 44, 47), 1 hdc in the second marked stitch and 1 hdc in each stitch to the end of the row.

After this row we will start to work the back side of the top part of the Fall Colors Dress.

Basically we will repeat the pattern for the front side but in mirror.

So, we will continue to work the same number of straight rows as we did for the front side, before the neck opening.

S – 11 rows

M – 13 rows

L – 14 rows

XL – 15 rows

XXL – 16 rows.

Now to obtain the same shape as for the front side we will start, beginning with the next row, decreasing with 1 st at every beginning and end of the row.

We will do the decrease by making sc2tog in the first 2 sts and in the last 2.

We will work like this:

S – 39 rows

M – 37

L – 36

XL – 36

XXL – 36

Now we have the same width as we started and of course the same number of stitches.

We will continue with straight rows, without decreasing:

S – 5 row

M – 7 rows

L – 8 rows

XL – 8 rows

XXL – 8 rows.

And the top part of the Fall Colors Dress is done. Fold it in half and sew the edges.

Skirt

Start in one side of the bottom of the top part. We will work the skirt in half double crochet, but working in rounds this time.

Round 1

Ch 1, 1 hdc in the same st. 1 hdc in each stitch of the bottom of the top part. Sl st with the first hdc.

Repeat round 1 for as many rounds as you want, until you have the desired length.

I made 12 rounds with 2 strands in Chocolate color and then 10 rounds with each of the next color.

After finishing you will have to make one cord for the waist. I made 1 chain off 180 sts and then 1 sl st in each st to the end. Make it as long as you need.

Then with a yarn needle insert the cord trough the sts in the middle of the dress. Aa…..nd done.

The Pumpkin Sweater

The Pumpkin Sweater had to be posted last week, but I was super busy trying to finish some other projects that I had, that I didn’t have time to write.

But here it is: an easy and super fun pattern.

The idea of this Pumpkin Sweater came after I bought this beautiful Merino wool yarn which came in 4 skeins of 50 grams each (160 m) with a beautiful degrade. The Yarn is from hobbii.com and is called Mayflowers Merino the collection.

You can find there some beautiful colors.

This particular yarn is light and according with the weight is a fingering 4 ply yarn, but according with the thickness, I would say that is closer to a DK, worsted yarn.

So, a DK worsted yarn might work too for this pattern. If you want to obtain the degrade, you can work with a thinner yarn, choosing two colors and working with 2 strands of yarn, using for the middle part, one strand of one color and one strand of the other.

The pattern is for sizes from 6 months up to 4-5 years and is wrote in US terms.

The total amount of yarn you will need for each size is:

6 months – 140 gr/ 430 m/ 470 yds
12 – 18 months – 160 gr / 510 m / 560 yds
2 – 3 years – 170 gr / 545 m / 590 yds
4 – 5 years – 200 gr / 630 m / 690 yds

About the design

The Pumpkin sweater is a raglan sweater worked from top to bottom.

Starting with a yoke and then separating the sleeves from the body of the sweater. Then working the sleeves and body individually.

I liked working with raglan because no assembly is needed.

The stitch that I used is the Cross Stitch. I alternate one round in single crochet and one in double crochet cross stitch.

Here is the stitch chart and the beginning of the yoke:

So, the first round will be in single crochet and the second in double crochet cross stitch.

For all the sweater we will only repeat these 2 rounds.

Cross stitch

Skip one stitch and make 1 dc in the next. Then go back and make 1 dc in the stitch that you skipped.

Abbreviation used in this pattern

Ch – chain

Sc – single crochet

Dc – double crochet

dc cross – double crochet cross stitch

St(s) – stitch (es)

Sl st – slip stitch

Inc – Increase (3 sc in the same st on the round in sc or 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc on the round in dc cross)

Dec – decrease

Gauge

9 dc cross = 10 cm (4″)

18 sc = 10 cm (4″)

12 rows ( 1 sc and 1 dc cross) = 10 cm (4″)

Now with all these things being said we can start the Pumpkin Sweater.

First the foundation chain:

6 month – 56 sts
12 – 18 months – 64 sts
2 – 3 years – 72 sts
4 – 5 years – 80 sts

Join with sl st.

Round 1

For this round the number of sts for sizes 12 – 18 months, 2-3 years and 4-5 years are wrote between brackets.

Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st 1 sc in the next 7 (8, 9, 10) sts, 1 inc in the next (3 sc in the same st).

Continue with 1 sc in the next 10 (12, 14, 16) sts, 1 inc in the next st, 1 sc in the next 16 (18, 20, 22) sts, 1 inc in the next, 1 sc in the next 10 (12, 14, 16) sts, 1 inc in the next, 1 sc in the last 8 (9, 10, 11) sts.

Sl st to join.

To be more easy to know where to increase on the next round, put a stitch marker in the second st of the increase.

Round 2

Ch 2, 1 dc in the same stitch, dc cross to the marked st, 1 inc ( 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in the marked st.

Continue with the dc cross to the next corner ( next marked st) and here make another inc.

Continue like this to the end of the round and join with a sl st with the 1st dc.

We will repeat to alternate these 2 rounds until we finished the yoke and have in total:

6 months – 16 rounds

12 – 18 months – 16 rounds

2-3 years – 16 rounds

4-5 years – 18 rounds

On the next round we will separate the sleeves from the body of the pumpkin sweater.

We will start the round as normal and working 1 sc in each st until the first corner.

To make the join we will make 2 sc together, one in the fist corner, then skip the sts for the sleeve and make the second sc in the second corner.

Yarn over and pull the yarn trough all loops on the hook.

At this round I changed the color with the second one.

Now we will continue to work on the body of the Pumpkin Sweater until you have in total (counting from the armpit to the bottom):

6 months – 24 rounds

12 – 18 months – 26 rounds

2 – 3 years – 30 rounds

4 – 5 years – 32 rounds.

Having 3 more colors, I just divided the number of rounds at 3, and worked the same number of rounds with each color.

Sleeves

Round 1

Starting from the armpit, join the yarn and make 1 sc in each st around.

Make sure that you have an even number of sts because you will need that on the dc cross round.

If you don’t have, just make 1 sc more to get to an even number.

Round 2

Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, dc cross to the end of the round. Join with a sl st.

Round 3

Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, 1 dec ( sc2tog), 1 sc in each st until you have 2 sts left, 1 dec in these 2 sts. Sl st to join.

Repeat round 2 and 3 until you have in total

6 months – 14 rounds

12 – 18 months – 14 rounds

2 – 3 years – 20 rounds

4 – 5 years – 20 rounds

Then continue to alternate one round in sc and one round in dc cross, without decreasing:

6 months – 6 more rounds

12 – 18 months – 8 more rounds

2 – 3 years – 6 more rounds

4- 5 years – 8 more rounds.

And 1 sleeve is done. For the colors I used the same pattern as for the body of the Pumpkin Sweater, only that with the last color I made less rounds because the sleeve is shorter.

Repeat the same pattern for the second sleeve and the Pumpkin Sweater is done.

Blue Sky Cardi

This cute Blue Sky Cardi is actual the mini version of Sunny Cardi that I posted last week, but as everything mini, is so cute and can’t wait to see more pictures of it from you.

About the design

The Blue Sky Cardi is worked starting with a square, letting spaces for the sleeves, then continue working the square to get to the length.

After that, work to make the front panels wider to have almost the same width as the back.

The sleeves are worked in rounds starting from the armpit, the bottom of the arm holes.

About materials you will need

The yarn I used is not a well known brand of yarn. I just order this yarn long time ago on e-bay. Only used it to try different stitches and never got a project for it.

Actually at first didn’t know what kind of yarn it is because I didn’t had a skein with label. But when I was almost finishing the Blue Sky Cardi, I found one last skein with label, so at least to be able to tell you about yarn composition and weight.

So, is a bamboo and cotton mix yarn and is very soft. I also have a similar yarn that I bought from hobbii.com and if you want to see more about it check here.(not an affiliate link. just want to give you an idea about the yarn)

The fact is that you can use any fingering 14 ply or sport 12 ply yarn. Even another weight of yarn if you want and just follow the measurements in the diagram bellow.

On the first row are the measurement in cm and on the second in inch. The first size is 2 years and the ones between ( ) are for 4, 6, 8 and 10 years old.

The hook size is 3.5 mm (E US Size).

You will also need stitch markers if you need to mark the corners and for marking the sleeves, scissors and a tapestry needle to wave in the ends.

This pattern is for sizes from 2 to 10 years.

Because the measurement are pretty closer at these ages I just made the pattern from 2 to 2 years. If you want to make the Blue Sky Cardi for an age that is between, make the smaller size. (For example my daughter has 2 years and 5 months and I made the 2 size.

Let’s see how much yarn we will need:

2 years – 140 gr / 500 m / 545 yds
4 years – 160 gr /590 m/640 yds
6 years – 190 gr / 700m/760 yds
8 years – 220 gr / 820 m/890 yds
10 years – 270 gr /980m/1060 yds

Gauge

22 dc = 10 cm (4″)

10 rows = 10 cm (4″)

Abbreviations:

Ch – chain

Dc – double crochet

St (s) – Stitch (es)

dc2tog – 2 double crochet worked together

sl st – slip stitch

The stitch pattern is easy to follow. 2 solid rounds worked in double crochet and 2 rounds worked in filet stitch.

Filet stitch

1dc, ch 1, skip 1, 1dc

Here is the chart with the stitch pattern and how it’s worked in a square.

Ok, with those things I said above, we are ready to start the Blue Sky Cardi.

Round 1

Make a magic circle, ch 3 and 11 dc inside the circle. Join with sl st with the 3rd stitch of the starting chain. This is counting as a first solid round.

Round 2

Solid round

The ch2 at the beginning of each solid round doesn’t count as a first stitch.

Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in the next st, [(2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the next, 1 dc in the next 2 sts].

Repeat the section in [ ] to the end of the round. Sl st with the 1st dc.

Round 3

Filet round

Ch 4, skip 1, 1 dc in the next, ch 1, skip the next, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc ) in the ch 3 space, [ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in the next] – 3 times, ch 1, (1dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in the next ch 3 space, ch 1, 1 dc in the next, [ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in the next] – 2 times, ch 1, skip 1, (1 dc, ch 3, 1dc) in the next ch 3 space, ch 1, 1 dc in next, [ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next] – 2 times, ch 1, skip 1, (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in the next 3 ch space, ch 1, 1 dc in next, ch 1 and join with a sl st with the 3rd stitch of the starting ch.

At the end of this round make sure that you have the same number of little opened squares on each side. You should have 4.

Round 4

Filet round

Ch 4, skip the ch 1 space, 1 dc in the next, [ch 1, skip the next ch 1 space, 1 dc in the next].

Repeat the section in the [ ] until you get to the corner, the first ch 3 space.

Before and after the corner, always ch 1 when you work on filet round.

[( 1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in the ch 3 space, ch 1, 1 dc in next, [ch 1, skip the next ch 1 space, 1 dc in the next] – repeat this section to the next ch 3 space.]

Repeat the section between [ ] until you get to the end of the round. Sl st with the 3rd st of the starting ch.

Round 5

solid rounds

ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, [1 dc in each st to the corner, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in the ch 3 space].

Repeat the section between [ ] to the end of the round.

Round 6

Repeat round 5.

From now on we will alternate 2 filet rounds and 2 solid rounds until we get to the width of the cross back.

2 years – 12 rounds
4 years – 13
6 years – 14
8 years – 15
10 years – 16

On the next round we will let the spaces for the arm hole.

Lay your square flat. Count from the up corner (not counting the stitches in the corner) the number of sts that you need for the arm hole depth and put a stitch marker. Proceed the same on the other side.

2 years – 22 sts
4 years – 26
6 years – 28
8 years – 30
10 years – 32

Start the round as usual, and work the round to the first corner. Make the stitches in the ch 3 space on the corner and then chain the same number of sts that you left for the arm hole depth.

Skip the sts for the arm hole and make 1 dc in the marked st. Continue the round as usual until you get to the next stitch marker.

Make a dc here, then ch the number of sts for the arm hole depth. Skip the stitches and move to the corner. Make the sts in the corner and continue your round to the end.

Starting with the next round we will continue to alternate 2 filet rounds with 2 solid rounds, until we get to the length of our Blue Sky Cardi.

2 years – 13 rounds
4 years – 14 rounds
6 years – 15 rounds
8 years – 14 rounds
10 years – 17 rounds

At the end of these rounds the main square is done and we have only to work the sleeves and to make the front panels wider.

Extending the front panels

Working on the wrong side, insert the hook in the corner.

This extension I calculated to start with a filet round, but if not just start with the row that you have and continue to alternate 2 rounds in filet and 2 solid rounds:

2 years – 12 rows
4 years – 12 rows
6 years – 16 rows
8 years – 16 rows
10 years – 16 rows

Sleeves

The sleeves are worked in rounds starting from the armpit.

Round 1

Insert the hook and yarn to the armpit, at the bottom of arm hole.

Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st and continue with 1 dc in each st to the end of the round. Sl st with the 1st dc.

Round 2 and 3

These 2 rounds are made in filet.

Round 4 and 5

Ch 2, dc2tog, continue with 1 dc in each st until you have 2 sts left. In these 2 sts make dc2 tog and join.

Continue alternating 2 rounds in filet and 2 solid rounds with a decrease at the beginning and at the end of the round until you have 17 rounds in total.

After 17 rounds you will stop decreasing on the solid row and continue working on the sleeve length until you have in total:

2 years – 21 rounds
4 years – 25 rounds
6 years – 29 rounds
8 years – 31 rounds
10 years – 31 rounds

If you want shorter or longer sleeve make more or less rounds.

Repeat the same with the other sleeve.

And this was it. I really love this Blue Sky Cardi and every child will look so cute in it. You must try this. Can’t wait to see your pictures.
