When I designed earlier this year the Dreamscape Tee using intarsia crochet technique to create an abstract color work, I knew I had to make more designs like this.

This is how I came up with My Happy Place Tee for which I used the same technique to recreate a white sandy beach landscape.

This year we are choosing not to travel for vacation due to the new traveling circumstances, so I wanted to have with me and wear anytime I want “my happy place”.

Many of you asked me how I transformed the photo I used as inspiration in a chart, when I first posted a short video with this idea.   I used Stitch Fiddle, which is available online and you Can use it for different crochet charts. It was the first chart I made from a picture and it took me a while to figure it out how to do it and I promise that next time I will use it and it will be more clear for me what has to be done, I will write more about it and I will share with you more details.

For now, I am not really sure what I did and which were the steps, but I am glad I managed to make the chart which helped me to make this unique T-shirt and I hope it will help you too.

Now, let’s see what you will need and how you can make “My Happy Place Tee”

Materials you will need

  • Category 1, light, fingering weight yarn
  • 4 mm  crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for wave in ends
  • Scissors
  • 2 stitch markers

Notes about design

This pattern requires techniques as half double crochet, front post and back post double crochet, chain stitches. The front panel has a color work made using intarsia technique.

The construction of the shirt is from 2 panels, front and back panel. First, the front panel is worked, then we are working the neckline and then is worked the back panel, continuing the front panel.

The back panel has a V shape pattern made out of chain stitches.

Skill level required is intermediate due to the color work on the front panel, but if you are a beginner and want to learn new techniques like intarsia crochet, you can make this.

Final Measurements

This pattern is available in 6 sizes, from S up to 3XL.

It has an over-sized fit, with a positive ease of about 18 cm around the bust circumference. In case you want a closer fit you can use a smaller hook. Starting with less stitches might affect the color work picture.

Final measurements of the My Happy Place Tee are written bellow.

Measurements for sizes M, L, XL, 2XL, and 3XL are written between brackets.

Neck width a: 22 cm (22, 24, 25, 26, 27)

Bust width b: 52 cm (57, 62, 67, 72, 77)

Armhole Depth d: 18 cm (21, 21, 24, 24, 27)

Length e: 55 cm (55, 55, 55, 55, 55)

This measurements will fit:

To Fit S M L XL 2XL 3XL
Bust 86 96 106 116 126 136

How much yarn do you need?

For this design I used Fair Cotton by Katia. This is 100% cotton and 1 ball has 50 grams and approximate 155 meters

For the color work on the front panel, you will need 9 different colors. The back panel is worked in one single color which is one used for the top part of the front panel.

Below you will find all shades I used and how much you will need for each size.

For each size you will approximate need:

Katia Fair Cotton 50g/155m S M L XL 2XL 3XL
Light Yellow 1 1 1 1 1 1
Mustard 1 1 1 1 1 1
Fawn Brown 1 1 1 1 1 1
Pastel green 1 1 1 1 1 1
Turquoise 1 1 1 1 1 1
Green Blue 1 1 1 1 1 1
Bottle Green 1 1 1 1 1 1
Grey Blue 1 1 1 1 1 1
Sky Blue 4 5 5 6 6 7

I chose the shades to recreate a beach photo on the front panel, but you can use any shades you want or you have. It will be interesting to see a beach landscape in some abstract color J

For smaller sizes you will need a small amount of yarn of each color, for the front panel color work and you can use some left over yarn too.

Abbreviation used in the pattern

  • Ch – chain
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Fpdc – front post double crochet
  • Bpdc – back post double crochet
  • St(s) – stitch(es)
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side
  • ** – repeated section
  • R| – row

Front Panel Color work

For the color work of the front panel we will use intarsia crochet technique. This means that for each section of color we will need a different skein of yarn because we are not carrying on the yarn.

You don’t need 2 different skeins of color which is used in 2 sections. Just divide the specific color skein to have 2 separate balls for each section.

The colors you will need to split: light yellow, bottle green, Gray Blue, Sky blue.

*with sky blue you can use 2 different skeins of yarn because you have more of them. The rest will be used for the back panel because is the main color for it.

When changing the colors, finish the last st in the current color with the next color you want to use.

You don’t have to carry the unused color along the entire row, unless you have to change the color a few sts after. In this case make the sts over the other color strand.

In case the pattern requires to change the color a few sts before the next color is, grab the strand and change the color working the next sts over.

When working on the right side, let the strands of yarn in the back of your work. When working on the wrong side, bring them in front.

When you have to change color at a beginning of a row, change the color in the last st and then carry on the previous color behind the stitches to have it on hand when you have to change it again.

If don’t like the idea of counting sts, use the previous row as guidance and read on the chart only the sts you need to make extra compared with the previous row.

For the front panel color work you can use the color chart or the written pattern below.

The stitch chart above is for size S. In the PDF version of this pattern you will find  attached a chart for each individual size.

These charts were draw free hand from size to size, and for some colors you will see less stitches in a bigger size then in a smaller one. The stitch count is correct, only that some colors in bigger sizes need less stitches and some more, to keep the original landscape.

Each Row on the chart represent one row on your work and each square one stitch. For the RS rows follow the chart from right to left and for WS rows from left to right.

The entire Tee is worked in half double crochet, except the ribbed band on the bottom hem and sleeves and except the chain stitches pattern on the back panel

Gauge

17 hdc = 10 cm

14 rows = 10 cm

Notes about the pattern

Ch 2 at the beginning of a row doesn’t count as first hdc.

For all sizes the length is the same and you will have to work 73 rows in total, not counting the ribbed band.

In case you want to add some length, you can repeat a few rows along and this will not affect the picture.

In case you don’t want to make the chain stitches pattern for the back panel you can just work 73 rows just n half double crochet.

Instructions

The numbers for sizes M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL are written between brackets.

After R70, we will work just a few stitches on shoulders and let the space for the neck.

Use 2 stitch markers to mark the stitches for the neck line: 38 (38, 41, 41,42, 44, 46)

Work 3 more rows in the stitches left on the shoulders: 25 (29, 32, 36, 39, 42) left on each side.

You will work left side in sky blue and right side in grey blue.

Stitch the front panel and back panel edges together.

Sleeves Ribbing

Using sky blue color, work the same ribbed band pattern you did for the bottom hem.

This time work in rounds and join with a sl st in 3rd st of the starting ch after each round.

Thank You for this beautiful pattern! But I see you measurements are in centimeters. Is this pattern written in U.S. terms or otherwise?
