These Backpack Key-chains I made them as small gifts for children in my daughter kindergarten.  Here is a tradition that every child has to bring small gifts for children on their birthdays. I really love the idea, because in this way every child is happy when they have to celebrate other child’s birthday.

Last year I made also some crocheted things, Crocheted Bunnies and the children ware so excited about them.

Backpack Key-chains

These Backpack key – chains are a super easy crochet project and if you have some left over yarn, you have to try it. It You can use them for children or why not attached them to your keys and use them for coins when going on shopping. So, besides of being so cute, can also be useful.

About Design

We are making these Backpack Key-Chains in one single piece, starting with a round base and then working the body. The flap is worked continuing the body and the key ring is attached as we go. At the end only have to sew the button and put a chain cord.

Materials you will need:

  • Yarn

I used Rainbow Cotton from Hobbii, which is a fingering, 4 ply, size 1, yarn.

  • 3 mm (size 5 US) Crochet hook
  • Key Ring
  • stitch marker
  • small button
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors

Pattern notes

We will work the backpack in continuous rounds, using a stitch marker to mark the first stitch. The flap is worked continuing the body of the backpack.

Gauge

Well the backpacks are too small to measure a gauge and on this pattern is not even count. The final measurement of the backpack, working with a fingering yarn and a 3 mm crochet hook are 5 cm (2″) high and 4 cm (1.5″) wide.

If you will choose to use a thicker yarn, the backpack will be bigger. Also, if you want a bigger backpack you can just add a few more rounds on the base and on the body.

Abbreviations used in this pattern:

  • Ch – chain
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Sl st – slip stitch
  • St (s) – stitch (es)

And with all these being said, we can start to make these cute little Backpacks key-chains.

Base

Round 1: We will start with a magic ring. Ch 1 and make 6 sc inside the ring.  At the end pull the end to make tee ring smaller.

Round 2: 2 sc in first st (mark the first st) and repeat in each st. At the end of the round you will have 12 sc.

Round 3: 1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in next. Repeat 6 times. At the end of the round you will have 18 sc.

Round 4: 1 sc in the first 2 st, 2 sc in the next st. Repeat 6 times. At the end of the round you will have 24 sc.

Round 5: 1 sl st in each of the 24 sts.

Repeat round 2 until you have 8 rounds for the body.

Round 1

After finishing the last round of the body, sl st with the 1st single crochet. Ch 1 and make 1 sc in the same st. Continue with 1 sc in the next 5 sts. Ch 1 and turn.

Round 2

1 sc in each 6 sts. ch 1 and turn

Repeat round 2 until you have 6 rows. Cut the yarn.

We will make a border on the flap and in middle we will let a small hole for button.

Start the border joining the yarn in the corner at the base of the flap and start working 1 sc in the next 5 sts. In the corner stitch make 3 sc, 1 sc in next, ch 2, skip 2, 1 sc in next, 3 sc in the next corner st, 1 sc in the next 5 sts. Sl st and cut the yarn.

Now basically the Backpack key-chain is done, we have only to insert the chain cord and sew the button.

I made the cord from 41 ch sts. If you want you can make it longer. Insert the cord through the sts on the second round counting from the top and then sew the button.

And the Backpack Key-chain is done. Pretty easy isn’t it?
