I wanted for long time ago to make something with this slanted stitch pattern. I don’t have a name for it because it’s a sort of variation of everything slanted I saw, but it’ beautiful and perfect for summer clothes.

About Design

Ones you got the idea of the stitch pattern, everything is simple with this top. Just 2 identical panels seamed together. Starting from the armpit we will begin to decrease for the arm holes and this might be the tricky part of this top.

This top is just perfect. Wear it with a tank under and a skirt or some jeans and you have a perfect outfit for a walk. Take it over your favorite swimsuit and you have a perfect cover up.

Materials You will need:

  • Yarn

Worsted, 10 ply, medium size yarn

I used Lion Brand 24/7 cotton

  • Crochet Hook

5 mm ( size h) crochet hook

  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

About the yarn

I have to be honest that it was weird for me to work something for summer with such a thicker yarn because I am more used with fingering weight yarn. This Lion Brand Yarn is amazing, easy to work with and being thicker and with such a lacy stitch pattern, I finished the top in no time.

The yarn composition is 100% cotton which is perfect for a summer garment because you can wear it all the time and wash it every day.

If you want to use a thinner yarn, you can adjust the pattern of this top easily just by adding more stitches to the foundation chain to get the desired width.

I will give you more details in the stitch pattern area.

Final measurements

The Evergreen Top has a looser fit with a positive ease of 6 cm around bust circumference. If you want a closer fit, you can just start with fewer stitches or make one size down.

Below you can find the diagram with final measurements for each size.

About the stitch pattern

The stitch pattern used for this Evergreen Top is a combination of triple crochet with chains. Is just a 1 row repeat, so you will figure it out quick how the stitch pattern is working.

To make the stitch you will need a multiple of 9+1 stitches to start with, so if you want to use a thinner yarn have this in mind and when you make your foundation chain, make as many groups of 9 stitches as you need to get to the desired width.

The repeated section in one row pattern is a group of 4 triple crochet separated by 2 chain stitches made in the same stitch or chain space.

[1 Trc, ch 2] x 4 times in the same st or chain space.

We will call this section below in the pattern, motif. So when is written in the pattern motif you will know that you have to make this group of 4 Trc in the same stitch

Below you have the stitch pattern chart. The chart is representing one panel of the top.

Evergreen Top. Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

The number of stitches in the chart are for size S, if you are working this top in bigger size you will have more stitches and you will have to repeat the pattern section in a row more times.

Abbreviations used in this pattern:

  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • Trc – triple crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st (s) – stitch (es)

Gauge

  • 9 sts (1 motif ) = 6 cm (2.5”)
  • 4.5 rows in the stitch pattern = 10 cm (4″)

And I think we are done with all details and we can start.

Pattern notes

*Ch 4 at the beginning of the row, counts as first trc.

*motif = a group of 4 trc separated by 2 chain stitches made in the same st or ch 2 space.

*starting with row 2 the motif will be made always in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif

Back and Front side

The panels are worked bottom-up. We will start with the foundation chain:

  • S – 73 sts
  • M – 82 sts
  • L – 91 sts
  • XL – 100 sts

For all sizes

Row 1:

Ch 4 + 2 (6 sts in total, first 4 as first Trc and 2 separating ch), in the 7th st 1 Trc, ch 2, 1 Trc in the same st, ch 2, 1 trc in the same stitch, ch 2, skip next 8 sts,  [1 motif, ch 2, skip next 8 sts]. Repeat the section between [ ] to the end of the row. Finish the row with ch 2, skip 8, (1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc, ch 1, 1 trc) in the last st. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 2

Ch 1, (1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc) in the first ch 1 space of the previous row, ch 2, [1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2]. Repeat the section to the end of the row. Finish the row with (1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc) in the first ch 2 space of the last group of 3 trc, ch 1, 1 trc in the 4th st of the starting chain.

Repeat row 2 until you will get to the armpit. I calculated the length of the top to the armpit the same for all sizes, so you will have to work 20 rows. If you will like to have a longer or shorter top, just work more or fewer rows.

Next we will start to decrease and to shape the upper part of the Evergreen top.

Row 21

Start with 3 sl st ( you will skip 1st trc, 1 ch and the 2nd trc) ch 4 [1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2]. Repeat the section to the last motif of the previos row and make here your last motif, ch 2, 1 trc in the last ch 2 space (the one between the 2 trc from the previous row). Ch 4 and turn.

Row 22

Start with a motif of 3 trc separated by ch2 instead of 4, in the first ch 2 space of the 1st motif of the previous row, ch 2 [1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2]. Repeat the section to the end of the row. Finish the row with ch 1, and 2 trc crochet together, 1 partial trc in the trc before the last one and one in the last. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 23

(1 trc, ch 1, 1 trc) in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2, [1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2]. Repeat the section to the end of the row. Finish the row with (1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc) in the first ch 2 space of the last 3 trc group, 1 trc in the last trc. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 24

Starting with this row we will stop increasing on sides.

Ch 2 (6 with the 4 sts turning chain), [1 motif in the first 2 ch space of the previous row motif, ch 2]. Repeat the section to the end of the row. Finish the row with 1 trc in the trc before the last 2, ch 1, 1 trc in the last trc. Ch 4 and turn.

Repeat row 24:

  • S – 2 more rows
  • M – 3 more rows
  • L – 4 more rows
  • XL – 4 more rows

We have now in total:

  • S – 27 rows
  • M -28 rows
  • L – 29 rows
  • XL – 29 rows

Starting with the next row we will make the shoulder straps. The pattern is the same for all sizes, but let’s just starts count again from one to keep it clear.

You don’t have to cut the yarn, just continue from where your yarn left.

Right shoulder strap

Row 1

Ch 2, 1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2, [1 trc, ch 1, 1 trc] in the same first ch 2 space of the next previous row motif. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 2

1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the previous row motif, ch 2, 1 trc in the last ch 2 space, ch 2, 1 trc in the 4th st of the starting chain. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 3

Ch 2, (1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc) in the ch 2 space or the trc next to it, 1 trc in the second trc of the previous row motif.

Row 4 (optional)

Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, ch 2, 1 sc in the 3rd trc, ch 2, 1 sc in the 4th st of the starting chain.

Fasten off.

Left shoulder strap

Count from left to right 2 motif and join the yarn in the first ch 2 space of the second one.

Row 1

Ch 4, 1 trc in the 2nd trc, ch 2, 1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the next motif, ch 2, 1 trc in the last ch 2 space, ch 1, 1 trc in the 4th st of the turning ch. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 2

ch 2, 1 motif in the first ch 2 space of the next motif, 1 trc in the 4th st of the turning chain. Ch 4 and turn.

Row 3

(1 trc, ch 2, 1 trc) in the second ch 2 space of the motif, ch 2, 1 trc in the 4th st of the turning ch.

Row 4 (optional)

Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, ch 2, 1 sc in the next trc, ch 2, 1 sc in the last trc. Fasten off.

And done! One panel is done and all you have to do is to make one more identical.
