After making “My Precious Sweater” I was kind of addicted on diamond stitch pattern. I was thinking entire summer to make something with diamonds for summer, and one day this pattern came into my head and so glad it did.

About Design

This Diamonds Lace Top is worked top down, using the raglan technique. This means it can be easily adjust in length and even width. Also you can add longer sleeves if you want.

It’s important on this design the stitch pattern, and for this diamonds to work you will have to pay attention at the number of stitches you will start with.

We will talk a bit more in the stitch pattern section.

This top has a negative ease of 3 cm around bust circumference. Below in the pattern notes you will find indication on how you can make this top with a closer or even looser fit.

Materials You will need:

  • Yarn

Sport, 5 ply, category fine

  • Crochet Hook

4 mm ( size G) crochet hook

  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

About the yarn

As you already know I’m crazy about cotton yarn and cotton mix yarn. I found it super easy to work with and for summer clothes cotton is perfect.

For this Diamonds Lace Top I used Scheepjes Catona, which is a mercerized cotton. You can find this yarn in so many colors that is almost difficult to choose. The recommended needle for this yarn is 2.5 mm – 3.5 mm. I used a bigger hook to obtain the drape that I like.

Final measurements

This pattern is available in 3 sizes, Small, Medium and Large.

As I said in Design section, this Diamonds Lace Top has a negative ease. The measurements were taken before blocking. For reference the model has 86 cm bust circumference and is wearing size S.

Below you will find the diagram with final measurements.

How much yarn do I need?

Like I said before this pattern is available in 3 sizes: Small, Medium and Large and is written in US terms.

For each size you will need:

S – 170 grams, 430 m, 470 yds ( 4 skeins )

M – 200 grams, 504 m, 552 yds ( 4 skeins )

L – 230 grams, 580 m, 635 yds ( 5 skeins )

*depending on the length of the top and sleeves you might need more yarn.

About the stitch pattern

The stitch pattern we will use for this Diamonds Lace Top is a variation of diamond stitch.

We will make the diamonds using double crochet and chains so nothing special with this.

For this pattern to work you will need to start with multiple of 10+1 stitches on each section of the top (back, front, sleeves) and we will add 4 more stitches for the corner.

Below you will find the stitch chart for the yoke section.

Diamonds Lace Top. Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

The chart is representing first rounds to help you get the pattern. Also the chart is made for size S. On sizes M and L you will have with one solid diamond more on the back and front then the diamonds represented in the chart.

Abbreviations used in this pattern:

  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • st (s) – stitch (es)
  • Inc – increase corner  (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in the same st or ch 2 space)

Gauge

  • 18 dc = 10 cm (4”)
  • 9 rows = 10 cm (4”)

Pattern notes

*Ch 2 at the beginning of the round, counts as first dc.

*the top is designed with large sleeves, if you want the sleeves to be smaller you can start with only 10+1 sts for the sleeves. If you are doing so, and after completing the numbers of rounds for the yoke, you still need some width for your top you can work a few more rounds

*the top has a negative ease without blocking. For a closer fit add 2 more rounds on the yoke. For a 3 cm positive ease add 7 more rounds on the yoke or work as many rounds as you want to get to the desired width.

*use stitch markers for the corners to be easier to follow the pattern.

And with these being said let’s start crochet

Yoke

Foundation chain

S – 128 sts (41 for back and front, 21 for sleeves and 4 for increases)

M – 148 sts( 51 for back and front and 21 for sleeves and 4 for corners increases)

L – 148 sts( 51 for back and front and 21 for sleeves and 4 for corners increases)

After finishing the foundation chain, join with sl st to make a circle.

*the numbers for sizes Medium and Large are written between brackets ( ). If there are no brackets, the pattern will apply for all sizes.

On round 14 you will have to repeat round 6, only that you will repeat 2 more times on each side the repeated section.

For example on sleeves, you repeated the section  between [ ]2 times on round 6, and on round 14 you will repeat the section 4 times. Same on back and front. So instead of 6 solid diamonds you will have 8.

Diamonds Lace Top. Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

After 18 rounds, for size Small and Medium is done and the next round will be the one in which we will separate the sleeves from the body.

For size Large continue the yoke until round 23 and 24 will be the separated round.

Round 19: Repeat round 11.

Round 20: Repeat round 12

Round 21: Repeat round 13

Round 22: Repeat round 14

Round 23: Repeat round 15.

Let’s go next to the separating round. We will first see how we will work the separating round for sizes Small and Medium because it’s the same.

The idea is the same on each size and even if you are choosing to work more rounds on the yoke then the ones written in the pattern.

When you will get to the solid diamond before corners you will have to continue the pattern when joining back and front with the needed number of chains.

Separating round for sizes Small and Medium

Start the round as normal following the pattern. On this round the repeated pattern will be [1 dc in next 5, ch 5, skip 5]. Work this section until you get on the last diamond before the increase corner. Work on the last solid diamond 5 dc, then chain 5, skip the stitches for the sleeve and go to the first solid diamond after the second corner and make the 5 dc. Continue with the pattern to the next corner and here proceed the same.

Diamonds Lace Top. Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

Separating round size Large

For size Large the repeated section on separating round will be [1 dc in next 7, ch 3, skip 3).

Start the round as normal ( it will be the same as round 17), make the last solid diamond before corner (this will be 7 dc with the last one in the corner), ch 3, skip the stitches for the sleeve, and in the second corner you will make the 1st dc of the next solid diamond of the pattern. Continue with the pattern to the next corner and proceed the same with the second sleeve.

After the separating round you will continue working the body of the Diamonds Lace Top following the stitch pattern as you did until now.

Continue working on the body as many rounds as you like until you get to the desired length.

I worked in total for the body 21 rounds and the Diamonds Lace Top measures 23.5 cm.

And this was it! If you want you can continue working the sleeves as well. When you will start working on the sleeves you have to pay attention to continue with the stitch pattern.
