After one week and a half vacation couldn’t wait to came back to work. And here I am with a new tutorial for you.

This stitch can be worked with different types of yarn, but because summer is coming I used a thinner cotton yarn.

Summer Popcorn StitchI love it and can wait to make something with it, so I am open for any suggestions.

With this stitch I also will tell you and show you the foundation puff stitch. Is a foundation that you can use with success when you have to work more stitches in one single chain stitch.

For this tutorial I used a cotton thread and a 2 mm (or size B in US terms), but I think it will look just great if it’s worked with other type of yarn.

Abbreviations used in this pattern:

  • Ch – chain
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • pop – popcorn stitch
  • puff – puff stitch (or hdc cluster)
  • St(s) – stitch(es)

Special stitches

Puff stitch

In this pattern we will do a cluster of 2 half double crochet for our puff stitches: Pull up the loop on your hook to make it bigger, *yarn over, insert the hook trough the stitch, yarn over and pull out a loop. Now you have 3 loops in your hook. Repeat from * one more time. Now you have 5 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn trough all the loops on your hook and chain 1.

Popcorn Stitch

In this pattern we will do a 5 dc popcorn stitch.

Make in the stitch 5 dc. Remove the hook from the loop and insert it in the first dc st you have made. Grab the loop you removed the hook from and pull it trough the first dc.

V stitch

2 dc in the same stitch, separated with 1 ch st. (sc, ch 1, dc in the same stitch)

So, let’s start to make the Summer Popcorn stitch

First, the puff stitch foundation.

Ch 2. [1 puff in the second stitch, ch 1] repeat this section as many times as you want until you get to the desired length. You will finish your foundation with 2 ch sts.

Row 1

Ch 3. [In the middle of the puff make a V Stitch, ch 3] repeat to the end of the row, ending with 1 dc in the last st.

Row 2

Ch 3 [ in the middle of the V stitch, 1 pop, ch 3, 1 sc in the middle of the ch 3 space from the previous row, ch 3] repeat this section to the end of the row, endin with 1 pop in the last V stitch, 1 sc in the 3rd stitch of the turning chain.

And this was all about the Summer Popcorn Stitch. From now, just repeat this 2 rows, with the difference that from now you will make the V sts in the middle of the popcorn stitch (the joining st). Instead of that all the rows are the same.

Here is the chart for this Summer Popcorn Stitch

crosses & zeros
The name of this stitch is suggestive, after the rows that we will make. We will have “ crosses” from a cross stitch row, and “zeros” from a filet stitch row. We will add a single crochet row to this 2, just to define the “crosses & zeros”.

Love to find simple and beautiful stitches and collecting them here. I wish that this crochet library will grow and you can always find here some interesting stitches.

crosses & zeros

Abbreviations used in this pattern:

• Ch – chain
• Sc – single crochet
• Dc – double crochet
• St(s) – stitch(es)

For this stitch you will have to begin with a multiple of 2 + 1, adding the turning chain. In this case the turning chain will be 1 stitch because the first row will be in single crochet.

Round 1

1 sc in each st across.

Round 2

Ch 4, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next, *ch 1, skip 1 st, 1 dc in next st. Repeat from * to the end of the row.

Round 3

Ch 3, skip first ch 1 space, 1 dc in the next ch 1 space, turn to the previous ch 1 space that you skipped and make 1 dc, *1 dc in the next ch1 space, 1 dc in the previous ch 1 space. Repeat from * to the end of the row, ending with 1 dc in the 3rd st of the turning chain.

From now on just repeat these 3 rows as long as you want.
