The Mixed Up Sweater was born after one day when the idea of using thread along with some DK yarn came into my head and I am super happy and glad it did.

The combination is interesting and the final result it’s amazing: a modern sweater that it’s so easy to make, but that will make you so proud.

I love the holes created by working with thread using a way bigger hook then you supposed to. They give an airy feel to the sweater, making it so light and perfect for this early fall.

About the design

This Mixed Up Sweater is the classic Raglan Sweater, worked just in basic stitches, but using some color work and two different types of yarn,  make it be not that common.

So, this is a top – down sweater worked with raglan technique. After making the yoke we will separate the body from the sleeves and then we will work the 3 parts individually.

This sweater has a slight looser fit with a positive ease of 8 cm. If you want a closer fit, or even looser you can just work less or more rounds on the yoke until you have the desired bust width or you can make one size down or one size up.  The length of the sweater and of the sleeves can be easily adjusted on your taste, by just adding more rows.

Materials you will need

  • Yarn
    • Category 3, Light weight, 8 ply
    • Thread
  • Needle

4 mm crochet hook  (G size)

  • You will need a yarn needle also to hide the ends
  • Stitch makers optional

Final measurements

The final measurements are listed in the diagram bellow. The figures are in cm

How much yarn do you need?

I used for this Mixed Up Sweater, Scheepjes Color Crafter in color Black which is 100% premium acrylic and Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush which is 100% mercerized cotton and the recommended needle is 1.25 – 1.5 mm.

I used for thread color Jade and Electric Blue.

Each ball of Scheepjes Color Crafter has 100 grams and approximate 300 meters. The Scheepjes Maxi Sugar Rush has 50 grams and approximate 280 meters

*if you are not happy working with thread, you can still follow this pattern using the same type of yarn for the entire sweater.

For each size you will approximate need:

S – 2 balls of black, 1 ball of each color of thread.

M – 2 balls of black, 1 ball of each color of thread.

L – 3 balls of black, 1 ball of each color of thread.

XL – 4 balls of black, 1 ball of each color of thread.

*if you want to make longer sleeves of longer sweater you might need more red yarn.

About the stitch we are using

For the entire sweater we will use only double crochet.

The pattern color is simple: we will alternate 2 rounds of black with 2 rounds of thread. We will create in this way those stripes. After every 2 stripes with one color we will change.

Now that we finished the yoke, is time to separate the sleeves, from the body and start working the 3 parts individually.

Body

Separating round

Start the round as before, with the specific color (on size Small is black), and make 1 dc in each st until you get to the corner (the ch 2 space), make 1 partial dc in the corner, skip the sts for the sleeve and move forwoard to the next corner, make one partial dc in the corner, then yarn over and pull the yarn through all loops on your hook.

Continue with 1 dc in each st, until you get to the next corner. Repeat the same with the second sleeve and then make 1 dc in each st to the end of the round. Sl st to join with the first dc. Chain 2 and turn.

After you have the desired length we will add a brim. We will work this with sc in the back loop only

Chain 10 + 1, 1 sc in each of the 10 sts of the chain, sl st with next 2 st of the sweater bottom and turn

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until you finish the entire circumference of the hoodie. At the end join the ribbed band ends with sl sts.

Sleeves

For the sleeves we will follow the same color pattern as for the body.

Round 1

Insert the yarn in the middle st of the underarm, ch 2, 1 dc in the same st. Continue with 1 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st with first dc. Ch 2 and turn.

Round 2

Ch 2, 1 dec (1 partial dc in the first st, 1 partial dc in next, yarn over and pull the yarn through all loops on your hook), 1 dc in each st, until you have 2 sts left, 1 dec in the last 2 sts. Join with a sl st with first dc.

 Round 3

Ch 2, 1 dc in the same st, 1 dc in each st around.

Repeat rounds 2 and 3 until you have in total for the sleeve 25 rounds.

If you want a longer sleeve you can add a few more rounds without decreasing. If you need a smaller cuff you can continue with decreases as well.

After finishing the length of the sleeve, add the brim following the same pattern as for the bottom of the sweater.

Wave in all ends and done! Your Mixed Up Sweater is ready to be worn.
