If you are new to crochet, winter is the perfect season for you to keep making small and cosy thinks.

Well here I come with another idea for you and I hope you will be inspired and make this set for your beloved.

About design

The beanie has a simple design. It’s worked in rounds, starting with an elastic band.

After finishing the high we will do a few round decreasing, close the beanie and at the end if you want you can add a pom pom.

The Cowl is worked similar, in rounds also, only that we will start without a ribbed band and with more stitches.

For the cowls in general, I start with half more stitches then for the beanies.

About the stitch

The main stitch we will use for this Mossy Beanie & Cowl set, is the moss stitch or the mesh stitch ( you will find it in both ways)

This stitch pattern is a 2 rounds repeat, you will start the round different. Along the round is all about 1 sc, ch 1, skip 1.

For the elastic band of the beanie we will use single crochet in back loop only.

Materials you will need

First of all yarn. I used Go Handmade Cosy in color dusty rose and gray brown, but you can use any other type of DK, Light, 8 ply yarn or another weight yarn if you want but you will have to check your gauge.

For the type of yarn I used, I needed a 4 mm ( G) crochet hook.

You will also need a tapestry needle and optional a pom-pom

For the Baby, Toddler and Children sizes, one skein of each color (50 grams , 100 m, 109 yds / skein) will be enough to make the set. For Adult sizes you will need one more skein.

Abbreviations used in this pattern

Ch – chain

Sc – single crochet

Sc Blo – single crochet in back loop only

Dec – decrease ( 2 sc worked together)

Gauge

15 rows Sc Blo = 10 cm ( 4″)

17 moss sts = 10 cm ( 4″)

12 rows moss sts = 10 cm (4″)

Final measurements of the Beanie ( the cowl will be with half bigger in diameter than the beanie and almost the same high)

Baby

  • 35 cm ( 14 “) diameter
  • 14 cm (5.5″) high

Toddler

  • 42 cm (16.5″) diameter
  • 15 cm (6″) high

Children

  • 48 cm (19″) diameter
  • 16 cm (6.5″) high

Women

  • 55 cm (21.5″) diameter
  • 19 cm (7.5″) high

Men

  • 59 cm (23″) diameter
  • 22 cm (9″) high

And I think we can start.

Beanie

Elastic band

Choose one color that you want to use as a main color. I used Dusty Rose

Row 1

Ch 8 sts

Starting with the 2nd st, 1 sc in each st (7 sc). Ch 1 and turn

Row 2

1 sc blo in each st. ch 1 and turn

Repeat round 2 until you have in total

  • Baby – 53 rows
  • Toddler – 63 rows
  • Children – 72 rows
  • Women – 82 rows
  • Men – 88 rows.

After finishing the band, join the ends with slip sts.

And the elastic band is done.

Round 1

This round will be just in single crochet. As you saw above the gauge is different on the elastic band and the moss stitch pattern. To make sure that the beanie will have the same width and doesn’t became smaller, we will have to adjust at this round the number of sts.

Baby – add 7 sts

Toddler – add 10 sts

Children – add 10 sts

Women – add 10 sts

Men – add 12 sts

You are adding this sts on this first round, making 2 sc in the same stitch. For example on toddler size I made 1 inc at every 6 sts.

Round 2

Ch 1, 1 sc in the 1st st, [ch 1, skip 1, 1 sc in the next]. Repeat the section between [ ] to the end of the round. Join with a slip stitch with the ch 1 at the beginning. You will make the join with the second color.

Mossy Beanie & Cowl

We will alternate 2 rounds with the first color and 1 round with the second.

Round 3

Ch 2, skip 1st sc, 1 sc in the first ch 1 space, [ch 1, skip next sc, 1 sc in the next ch 1 space]. Repeat the section between [ ] to the end of the round. Sl st with first color.

Now, repeat round 2 and 3 until you have the needed high of the beanie. Remember to alternate 2 rounds in first color, 1 round in second.

Baby – 17 rounds

Toddler – 18 rounds

Children – 19 rounds

Women – 23 rounds

Men – 26 rounds

After we finish the high of the beanie, we will make a few more rounds decreasing and close the top of the beanie.

Next round

[1 dec, 1 sc] repeat to the end of the round

Next round

1 dec in each st to the end of the round and repeat this round as many times as you need, so that the beanie opening to be small enough ( to have not more than 10 sts).

After that, use a tapestry needle and pull the end of the yarn trough all the stitches. Pull and close the top of the beanie. After closing wrap the yarn few more times just to make sure that will be secure.

And the Beanie is done. You can add a pom pom or you can let it like it is.

Cowl

Now that we just made the Beanie, with the cowl will be more easy.

Chain with half more sts than you had for the beanie ( for example for toddler size, we had 73 moss sts for the beanie, for the cowl I chained 110 sts)

We will repeat round 2 and 3 of the Beanie as many times as you want until you will have the desired high. I made the same number of rounds as for the beanie, adding a few more to cover the elastic band high as well.

At the end I just made a twisted sc border and that was it.

I made one set with acrylic yarn, and the pattern worked just perfect.
