Update: May 25, 2021

Some long, long time ago I saw a similar shrug somewhere and I love it so much. I was a newbie back then and I couldn’t figure out how I can make it and no pattern founded.

It was a good thing to save the idea, because now after a few years, not only that I was able to design something similar, but also to write a pattern for all of you who will love it and who will love to try to make it.

Update: May 25, 2021

I made it a second time this shrug, just because I wanted to give it a fresh look and to adjust the pattern with the important information that the first version didn’t have. And also, I needed to make it again because I wanted to make a brand new video tutorial for it.

I followed the same pattern as back in 2019, but this time I got a bigger shrug because apparently, my tension changed in those passing years.

The pattern below is written according to my new tension. So, basically, everything is new about this pattern.

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: Worsted, 10 ply, medium size yarn
  • Crochet Hook: 5 mm crochet hook
  • You will need a yarn needle for weave in ends
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors

NOTES ABOUT DESIGN

The design of this shrug is simple. It’s that classic shrug made from one rectangle. The fantastic thing about this Bring Me The Sun Shrug is that to get to the final rectangle, we will start from a circle and then a square, and in the end, we will get to the final shape, the rectangle.

This pattern requires double crochet, chain stitches, single crochet stitches, and working in the round.

MEASUREMENTS AND SIZES

Circle Width (back panel) a: 76 cm (86, 96 and 106)

Front Panels Width (including sleeves) b: 23 cm (26, 29, and 32)

Cuff to cuff Width c: 122 cm (138, 154, and 170)

Length d: 54 cm (58, 68, and 72)

*all measurements are taken after blocking and include border

The pattern is written in sizes S/M, L/XL, 2XL/3XL, and 4XL/5XL

How much Yarn do you need?

I used the Recycled Yarn from We Are Knitters. Each ball of yarn has 100 grams and 192 meters.

For each size, you will need:

WAK Recycled Yarn S/M L/XL 2XL/3XL 4XL/5XL
100g/192 m 4 5 5 6

STITCH PATTERN AND TECHNIQUES

The pattern for the shrug is a V stitch pattern. This stitch pattern is worked in the round for the central circle and flat for the circle to square section and square to rectangle section.

To work the circle shape, alternate one round with increases and 1 round without increasing.

With each increase round, the number of V stitches between 2 increases, will be +1

ABBREVIATIONS

  • Ch – chain
  • Sc – single crochet
  • Dc – double crochet
  • Vst – V Stitch; (1dc, 1ch, 1dc) in the same st, 1ch or 1ch-sp

  • ** – repeated section.

TENSION (GAUGE)

NOTES

Each round starts in the first 1ch-sp; make 2slip stitches to get to the starting point.

Make 3ch at the beginning of each round. 3ch counts as the first double crochet.

Close each round with a slip stitch in the third stitch of the starting chain.

Work 1ch st the beginning of every single crochet round. 1ch does not count as the first single crochet.

Increase only on single crochet row and double crochet row: with 2 sts on single crochet row and 4 sts on double crochet row.

Starting with round 4, every Vst will be considered one st. When is written 1Vst in the next st, work the Vst into the 1ch-sp of the next Vst

Always work one chain after a Vst and skip 1ch-sp unless the pattern specifies otherwise.

SECTION 2: Square

Use 8 stitch markers to mark the corners.

Divide the circle circumference into 8 sections: top, bottom, left side, right side, and 4 corners.

Follow the table below to see how many Vst you should have for each section

Section S/M L/XL 2XL/3XL 4XL/5XL
Corners 9 10 12 12
Top&bottom 10 11 12 13
Sides 11 11 12 14
Total Vst 78 84 96 102

Next, work only on the corner stitches (first line in the table)Below you will find the stitch charts for the decrease. There are two charts:

  • one starting with 9 Vst as for the size S, but applies to all the sizes which have an uneven number of stitches
  • second, beginning with 10Vst as for sizes M, but applies to all the sizes with an even number of stitches.

An uneven number of Vst chart:

INSTRUCTIONS

Start: rejoin in the first Vst of the corner

R1: 4ch, 1Vst in each of the next Vst, except the last one, 1dc in last Vst. 3ch and turn

R2: 1dc in first Vst, 1Vst in each of the next Vst, except the last one, 1dc in last Vst, 1dc in the 3rd st of the starting ch. 3ch and turn.

For sizes S and 3XL, fasten off

Last row for only for sizes L/XL, 2XL/3XL, and 4XL/5XL

4ch, skip first Vst, 1Vst in the next 1ch-sp, 1chm skip last Vst, 1dc in the 3rd stitch of the turning chain.

The total number of rows for one corner:

7( 8, 10, 10) rows

Next, repeat the same pattern for the other 3 corners.

SECTION 3: Rectangle

For the rectangle shape, work flat only on the left and right sides of the square.

Face your work on the right side.

In each side row of the corner (3ch, or dc), work one Vst.

After each Vst, make 1ch.

Start: rejoin yarn into the corner Vst

R1: 4ch, 1Vst in each side row or Vst, until the end of the row, 1dc in the last Vst.

-total: 27 (29, 34, 36) Vst

R2: 4ch, 1Vst in each Vst until the end of the row, 1dc in the 3rd stitch of the turning ch.

Use one size smaller hook if needed.

In each side row Vst, work 3sc

R1: 1sc in each st around. Close the round with sl st into the first sc.

R2-R5: Rep. R1

R6: 4ch, 1dc in the same st, 1ch, skip next 3 sts, *1Vst in next, 1ch skip next 3sts. *rep. until the end of the round. Close the round with sl st into the 3rd st of the turning chain.
