Some long, long time ago I saw a similar shrug somewhere and I love it so much. I was a newbie back then and I couldn’t figure it out how I can make it and no pattern founded.

It was a good think to save the idea, because now after a few years, not only that I was able to design something similar, but also to write a pattern for all of you who will love it and who will love to try make it.

About Design

The design is simple. It’s that classic shrug made from one rectangle. The amazing thing about this Bring Me The Sun Shrug is that to get to the final rectangle we will start from a circle and then a square and in the end we will get to the final rectangle.

Materials You will need:

  • Yarn

Worsted, 10 ply, medium size yarn

  • Crochet Hook

5 mm ( size h) crochet hook

  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers

 About the yarn

For this shrug I used LB Collection Cotton Bamboo in color Gardenia -170 (1 skein has 245 yards, 224 meters / 3.5 oz, 100 G)

This yarn is just perfect for summer clothes. The softness and drape of bamboo rayon combined with the durability of the cotton make it perfect for stylish and comfortable clothes. I founded easy to work with and I love the final look.

Final measurements

Even if it’s a shrug and one size might fit many sizes, I made this pattern in 4 sizes from Small to 1X Large.

Below you can find the diagram with final measurements for each size that will help you to decide which size better fits you.

Bring Me the Sun Shrug. Free Crochet Pattern & Video TutorialHow much yarn do I need?

About the stitch pattern

The stitch pattern used for this Bring Me the Sun Shrug is the V Stitch.

1 double crochet, chain 1, 1 double crochet in the same stitch or ch 1 space.

As i said in “About Design” section, we will start with a circle.

Below you have the stitch pattern chart. The chart is representing the first few round of the main circle.

Gauge

  • After 7 rounds the circle measured 20 cm (8”) in diameter.

And I think we are done with all details and we can start.

Pattern notes

*Ch 3 at the beginning of the round, counts as first dc.

*if you want a longer shrug, work more rounds to the main circle until you have in diameter the desired length.

Main circle

Round 1

Start with a magic circle, ch 3 and make 11 more dc inside the circle. Pull the end to close the ring and join with a sl st with the 3rd st of the starting chain.

Round 2

Ch 3, 1 dc in the same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st, with the 3rd st of the starting ch. (24 dc)

Round 3

Ch 4 ( ch 3 as a 1st dc and one separating ch of the 1st V st), 1 dc in the same st, [ ch 1, skip 1, 1 V st in next]. Repeat the section to the end of the round. Finish the round with ch 1, skip 1 and sl st with the 3rd st of the starting chain. (12 V sts)

Round 4 (increase round)

1 sc in the ch 1 space of the 1st V st, ch 3, 1 V st in the same space, ch 1, [1 Inc in the next V st, 1 V st in next]. Repeat to the end of the round. Sl st with 3rd st of the starting chain.

Round 5

1 sc in the 1st ch 1 space, ch 3, 1 dc in the same st,  [ch 1, 1 V st in next V st]. Repeat to the end of the round. Join with a sl st with the 3rd st of the starting chain.

Round 6

1 sc in first ch 1 space, ch 3, 1 dc in the same st, ch 1, 1 V st in the next V st, ch 1, [1 inc, 1 V st in the next 2 V sts]. Repeat to the end of the round.

Round 7

Repeat round 5.

Next, continue alternate 1 increase round with 1 round without increasing. As you get further in the pattern, on the increase round you will have +1 V st between increases.

For example on round 4 the repeated section was 1 inc, 1 V st, on round 6 was 1 Inc, 2 V st, on round 8 will be 1 Inc 3 V sts and so on until you will finish the main circle and have in total:

  • S – 24 round
  • M – 26 rounds
  • L – 28 rounds
  • XL – 28 rounds

I suggest to increase one row in the second V st of the previous decrease and 1 row in the first one, just to have a perfect circle.

After finishing the main circle, fasten off.

Now we will transform the circle in square.

To make this we will use 8 stitch markers to mark the 8 section of the circle: 4 corners, top and bottom and left and right side.

At the end of the main circle you should have:

  • S – 78 V sts
  • M – 84 V sts
  • L – 90 V sts
  • XL – 90 V sts

Bring Me the Sun Shrug. Free Crochet Pattern & Video Tutorial

Divide the total amount of V sts to the 8 section of the circle like this:

  • S – 9 V sts for the corners, 10 V sts for top and bottom and 11 V sts for left and right
  • M – 10 V sts for the corners, 11 V sts for top and bottom and 11 V sts for left and right
  • L – 11 V sts for the corners, 11 V sts for top and bottom and 12 V sts for left and right
  • XL – 11 V sts for the corners, 11 V sts for top and bottom and 12 V sts for left and right

Circle to square

Now we will have to work the corners and make a square from the main circle.

Face your work on the right side.

Join the yarn on the right stitch marker of the corner.

Row 1

Ch 4, 1 V st in the next V sts until you have 2 V sts left, 1 dc in the V st before last one, ch 1, a dc in the last V st. Ch 4 and turn.

Repeat row 1 until you don’t have V sts left.

Repeat the same pattern for all 4 corners.

Now we have a square.

To make the square the final rectangle that we need for out Bring Me the Sun Shrug we will extend the left and right side.

Square to rectangle

Join the yarn in the right corner of the side you are beginning to work, ch 4, [1 V sts in next st, ch 1]. Repeat to the end of the row.

*On the first row, on the section with decreases from the corner work, try to make the V sts keeping approximate the same distance between them as on a regular row.

Bring Me the Sun Shrug. Free Crochet Pattern & Video Tutorial

*Starting with row 2 it will be easier because you will have to make 1 V sts in each V st and ch 1 between.

Repeat row 1 until you have in total:

  • S – 15 rows
  • M – 16 rows
  • L – 18 rows
  • XL – 22 rows

Repeat the pattern on the other side.

Now we have the final rectangle and is time to sew the sides and let the arm hole.

Fold the piece in half horizontally (the widest part) and use 2 st markers to mark the arm holes

Let for arm holes:

  • S – 5 V sts
  • M – 6 V sts
  • L – 7 V sts
  • XL – 7 V sts

Sew the rest of the sts.

Now we will add a border around starting in the middle st at the neck (top part).

Border

Round 1: Join the yarn, ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st with first sc.

Round 2 – 3: Repeat round 1

Round 4: Ch 4, 1 dc in the same st, [ch 1, skip 2 or 3 sts (depending on you tension) 1 V sts in next]. Repeat this section to the end of the round.

Round 5: repeat round 1

And done!

A beautiful Shrug,  ready to be taken over shoulders when you feel a bit cold in the summer nights.
