Morning Light Top – Free Crochet Pattern (Round Yoke Summer Top)

There’s something special about those designs that come naturally — the ones you start without a plan, just out of curiosity.

The Morning Light Top is exactly that kind of piece.

I initially picked up this yarn simply because I wanted to see how it works, how it feels, how it drapes… and before I knew it, it turned into a lightweight, elegant top that I kept reaching for again and again. What I love most about it is how simple construction meets refined texture — a clean round yoke, worked top-down, combined with a stitch pattern that gives just the right amount of structure while still keeping the fabric breathable and soft.

Designed for warm days and easy layering, this top is one of those pieces that quietly becomes a staple in your wardrobe.

In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to make your own Morning Light Top — from construction and sizing to yarn choices and helpful tips along the way.

NOTES ABOUT DESIGN

This garment is worked top-down using a round yoke construction, beginning at the neckline and continuing in the round. The yoke is shaped through evenly distributed increases, then divided into body and sleeves at the underarm.

The fit is designed with approximately 8–10 cm of positive ease at the bust for a comfortable, close-to-body silhouette. For best results, choose a size based on your actual bust measurement.

The neckline is designed to fit comfortably over the head and does not increase significantly between sizes. The depth of the yoke and the rate of increases are adjusted for each size to ensure proper fit across the shoulders and upper chest.

After the yoke is completed, the body and sleeves are worked separately. Underarm chains are added at the joining round to provide ease of movement and to help achieve the required stitch count for both the body and sleeves.

The stitch pattern is maintained throughout the garment. Depending on the size, the transition from yoke to body and sleeves may begin with either a double crochet round or a mesh stitch round. Care is taken to ensure stitch alignment (double crochet over double crochet and chain spaces over chain spaces) for a consistent and balanced fabric.

Lengths for the body and sleeves are graded gently between sizes to maintain similar proportions. Instructions are provided in rounds, along with approximate measurements in centimeters. For the most accurate fit, it is recommended to adjust the length based on your personal preference and row gauge.

or 907 (966, 1059, 1176) (1329, 1482, 1612, 1738, 1943) yd

INSTRUCTIONS

YOKE

Work in the round, with the right side facing at all times.
To create a less visible join, use a stacked single crochet (work 1 sc on top of another) to replace the first double crochet in rounds with chain spaces. For double crochet rounds, begin with ch 2, then work 1 double crochet in the same stitch; in the pattern the starting stitch will be wrtten as dc;
Close each round with an invisible slip stitch: remove the hook from the loop, insert the hook from back to front into the first stitch of the round, then pull the working loop through that stitch.
To keep the joining line straight, alternate the starting point on each double crochet round following a chain-space round—begin one round in the first stitch, the next in the second stitch.;

All Sizes

We will begin with 104 (104, 104, 104) (108, 108, 112, 112, 112) sts, increasing by 52 (52, 52, 52) (54, 54, 56, 56, 56) stitches in each increase round.
We will have an increase round at every 4th round and we will work 14 (14, 15, 17) (18, 19, 20, 21, 23) rounds for the yoke section with 3 (3, 4, 4) (5, 5, 5, 6. 6) main increase rounds;

For some sizes, extra increase rounds might be needed to achieve the required number of stitches for the yoke;
After completing the yoke, there will be 260 (286, 300, 312) (378, 378, 408, 420, 448) sts.
Begin with a foundation single crochet round as the base. Since linen yarn has very little stretch, using foundation single crochet helps prevent the neckline from becoming too tight.

Work: 104 (104, 104, 104) (108, 108, 112, 112, 112) foundation single crochet sts, and join with a sl st into the first stitch to close the round.

BODY

Before starting the body and sleeves, we need to divide the yoke into separate sections for the sleeves and body.

Let’s summarize the stitch count after completing the yoke:

260 (286, 300, 312) (378, 378, 408, 420, 448) stitches

JOINING ROUND

We will begin the joining round from the point where the yarn is attached. First, work across the back panel, then chain the required number of underarm stitches. Skip the sleeve stitches and continue with the front panel. Chain the second set of underarm stitches, skip the second sleeve stitches, and join with a slip stitch to the first double crochet.

The number of underarm stitches does not necessarily increase with larger sizes. These stitches are added to provide comfort at the underarm and to help achieve the required stitch count for both the bust and sleeves.

The joining round can be worked either as a double crochet round or as a mesh stitch round, depending on the stitch pattern of the last yoke round for your size.

Use stitch markers to mark the stitches for each section;

Back and front panels: 78 (85, 91, 93) (111, 115, 124, 128, 138)
Sleeves: 52 (58, 59, 63) (78, 74, 80, 82, 86)

Joining round pattern;
Work into the established stitch pattern 78 (85, 91, 93) (111, 115, 124, 128, 138), ch 14 (13, 14, 16) (8, 16, 14, 16, 18) sts, skip 52 (58, 59, 63) (78, 74, 80, 82, 86), work into the established stitch pattern, 8 (85, 91, 93) (111, 115, 124, 128, 138), ch14 (13, 14, 16) (8, 16, 14, 16, 18) sts, skip 52 (58, 59, 63) (78, 74, 80, 82, 86) and slip st into the first dc;

After the joining round you should have:
Bust: 184 (196, 210, 218) (238, 262, 276, 288, 312) sts
Sleeves: 66 (71, 73, 79) (86, 90, 94, 98, 104) sts

BODY LENGTH
Continue working into the established pattern until you reach the desired length or until you have 23 (23, 24, 25) (26, 27, 28, 29, 30) rounds;
Finish the body with the EDGING

SLEEVES
Rejoin the yarn at the underarm.

The first sleeve round follows the same stitch pattern as the joining round. Depending on the size, this may be a double crochet round or a mesh stitch round.

  • If the first sleeve round is a mesh stitch round worked on top of a double crochet round, rejoin the yarn at the underarm, as close as possible to the center.
  • If the first sleeve round is a mesh stitch round worked on top of another mesh stitch round, make sure the stitches align with the last yoke round (double crochet on top of double crochet and chain spaces on top of chain spaces). In this case, the starting point matters. Check the first stitch of the sleeve section and identify whether it is a double crochet or a chain space. Then count toward the center of the underarm chain, following the stitch sequence, and begin the round at a point where the first stitch will be a double crochet.

For the first round, you will work across the side edge of the body. To avoid increasing stitches, do not add extra stitches along this edge. Instead, you may insert the hook into the side row and work it together with the last stitch of the underarm chain and/or the first stitch of the sleeve.

The goal is to maintain stitch pattern continuity and preserve the required multiple of 2 stitches.

You may also adjust the pattern slightly at the end of the round if needed.

For some sizes, the number of stitches for the sleeve after the joining round may be uneven. To adjust to an even stitch count, add one stitch either at the end of the first sleeve round or in the following mesh stitch round.

After completing the first round, continue working into the established pattern 31 (31, 32, 33) (34, 35, 36, 37, 38) rounds, or until the sleeve measures approximately 38.5 (38.5, 40, 41, 42.5, 44, 45, 46, 47.5) cm from the underarm.
Finish the sleeve with the EDGING

EDGING

Work the same edging for the bottom hem, sleeves, and collar.

You can choose any other stitch pattern to finish the top as desired.

If you decide to use slip stitches, make sure to keep your stitches loose for a smoother, more flexible edge.

The slip stitches are not worked in the back loop only. After completing the first round of slip stitches, you will notice small V-shapes forming on the surface of the edge. If you look just behind those Vs, you will see another set of Vs—these are the top loops of the first single crochet round, which was worked as a base. Insert your hook into these back Vs when working the slip stitches.

Begin with a first round of single crochet stitches.
R1: ch1, 1sc in each st around;
R2: 1ch (counts as first st; place a st marker in it), 1slip stitch in each st around; close the round with a sl st into the first ch
R3 – R4: Rep. R2
