Craft Your Own Coral Sweater: Step-by-Step Guide

I am thrilled to share the Coral Sweater Pattern with you today. I hope you enjoy making it as much as I enjoyed creating it. I am deeply grateful to Durable Yarn. They allowed me to choose any yarn I wanted to take along on my summer vacation. Without their support, this design would never have come to life.

Yes, it’s true! I began working on this Coral Sweater during my summer vacation in August. I initially envisioned a two-color version, which I haven’t finished yet. However, I started this version right before I left to film the video tutorial for the yoke. After returning, I continued to focus on this version to progress with the tutorial, putting the two-color version on hold. I sincerely hope to complete that one someday as well.

The round-yoke construction is one of my favorites. I know many of you dislike the visibility of increases in this construction. With this particular design, I aimed to create a flawless round yoke with nearly invisible increases.

If I made you curious enough, let’s see how you can make the Coral Sweater

MATERIALS

  • Yarn: Size 2 , Sport weight yarn
  • Crochet Hook:
    o 4.5 mm crochet hook
  • yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Stitch markers
  • Scissors

NOTES ABOUT DESIGN

This blouse features a Round Yoke Top-Down construction with increases designed to be nearly invisible. If you’ve avoided round yoke styles because the increases are visible around the yoke, this design may suit you. It could be ideal for your preferences.

What sets this pattern apart is its emphasis on sustainability and creativity, encouraging you to use yarn from your stash. You have a wide range of options. Use fingering, sport, or even DK weight yarn. Ensure you meet the gauge requirements.

In terms of fiber choices, you can opt for breathable cotton. You can also create a warmer, cozier sweater with wool or other blends. It all depends on your preference.

The pattern offers comprehensive instructions. It also includes a video tutorial. The pattern comes in nine sizes, from Extra Small to 5X Large. This gives you the flexibility to customize the design to your style.

Enjoy crafting a garment that’s comfortable and unique. Bring this design to life, stitch by stitch.

STITCH PATTERN AND TECHNIQUES

CROSS STITCH

The primary stitch pattern used in the Coral Sweater is 1round in double crochet followed by one round in cross stitch.
To work the cross stitch:
Skip next st, 1dc in next st, go back and work 1dc into the skipped st;
When worked in the round, the cross stitch requires a multiple of 2 stitches; If the number of stitches is uneven, start with a single double crochet stitch;

Pattern (use it for the gauge swatch)

You can work the gauge swatch flat;

Ch a multiple of 2+1

R1: ch3 (count as a first dc), 1dc in each of the next sts; ch3 and turn
R2: *skip next st, 1dc into the next, go back into the skipped st and work 1dc; *rep. to the end of the row; finish the row with 1dc into the last st; ch3 and turn
R3: 1dc in each st to the end of the row;

INSTRUCTIONS

YOKE

  • Work in the round, only on the right side.
  • To make the join less visible, use a stacked single crochet (1 sc on top of another) as the first double crochet; in the instruction below you will find this first st written as dc;
  • Close each round with an invisible slip stitch: remove the hook from the loop, insert the hook from the back into the first stitch of the round, then grab the working loop and pull it through the first stitch.
  • To keep the joining line straight, alternate between starting the round from the first stitch and starting from the second stitch on every other round.

BODY

Before starting the body and sleeves, we need to divide the yoke into separate sections for the sleeves and body.

Let’s summarize the stitch count after completing the yoke:

198 (204, 220, 231) (255, 272, 314, 332) stitches

Place 4 stitch markers to divide the yoke into sections for the back, sleeves, and front.

The first stitch of the round will mark the beginning of the back panel.

Divide the yoke stitches as follows:

Back Panel: 60 (63, 67, 71) (74, 81, 87, 96, 103)
Sleeves: 39 (39, 43, 43) (53, 55, 57, 61, 63)
*Front Panel: 60 (63, 67, 72) (75, 81, 87, 96, 103)
*Sizes L and XL have different stitch count for the front panel as the total stitch count can not be equally divided.

Separating Round

Start the round from where your yarn is:

Work into the established stitch pattern for the next 60 (63, 67, 71) (74, 81, 87, 96, 103), ch 14 (16,16,16) (20, 20, 22, 22 23) sts, skip the next 39 (39, 43, 43) (53, 55, 57, 61, 63) sts (sleeves sts), continue working into the established stitch pattern for the next 60 (63, 67, 72) (75, 81, 87, 96, 103), ch 14 (16,16,16) (20, 20, 22, 22 23) sts, skip the next 39 (39, 43, 43) (53, 55, 57, 61, 63) sts (sleeves sts); close the round with a slip stitch into the first st;

Note: If you started the separation round from the second stitch, don’t forget to work the last stitch of the round. This stitch will be right after skipping the sleeve stitches and just before the first stitch, where you will need to work a slip stitch.

Body Length

Continue working into the established pattern until you reach the desired length or until you have 27 (27, 27, 27) (29, 29, 31, 31, 31) rounds;
Finish the body with the EDGING

SLEEVES
Rejoin the yarn at the armpit

Work the sleeves in the same stitch pattern, alternating between 1 round of double crochet (dc) and 1 round of the cross stitch pattern.

For the first round, crochet over the side row of the body

To avoid creating a space, work 3 double crochets together as follows:

Make 1 double crochet into the top of the side row dc, 1 double crochet into the bottom, and 1 double crochet into the same stitch as the body.

Proceed the same on the other side

After completing the first round, continue working into the established pattern until you get to the desired length or until you have: 21 (23, 23, 25) (25, 27, 27, 29, 29) rounds;

Finish the sleeve with the EDGING

EDGING

Work the same edging for the bottom hem, sleeves, and collar.
For the collar, begin with a first round of single crochet stitches.

R1: 1ch (counts as first st; place a st marker in it), 1slip stitch in each st around; close the round with a sl st into the first ch
R2 – R3: Rep. R1

TO FINISH
Weave in all the ends and block to measurements

And that was it! I can’t wait to see your creations! Happy Crocheting!
