Well guys, happy to be back here with a new pattern and I am super excited with the new year we have in front. I hope it will be at least as great as 2019, with all of you around me. It was an year full of hard work, but I enjoyed each moment and your support was amazing as always. My heart is full of joy every time I see your kind words and your makes and I am more then grateful that I am making part of this amazing community.

Anyways, even if I can say more about my gratitude and everything, this post has to be about “him”, my new sweater design, which I love it so much and this is is only thanks to you, because you encourage me not to give up on it and came up with some great ideas that helped me to make it as it is today.

Plaid Love Sweater. Free Pattern & Video Tutorial

This “Plaid Love” Sweater is amazingly beautiful and I was super happy when people around me asked me “Where did you buy it?” more because I could answered, ” I made it”.  They couldn’t believed it, which is not happening that often with crochet.

But, let’s see what it’s all about and how you can make this sweater.

Materials you will need

  • Yarn
    • Category 1, Fingering
  • Needle
    • 4 mm crochet hook (US G size)
  • You will need a yarn needle  to hide the ends
  • Stitch Markers
  • Scissors

Pattern notes

This Plaid Love Sweater is worked top – down, starting with the yoke and then divide it for sleeves and body.

On the yoke we will work a plaid pattern in using a variation of mosaic crochet technique.

After making the yoke we will repeat the same motif on the sleeves and sweater hem.

The pattern is available in 4 sizes, from Small to 1X large and is written in US terms.

All the measurements are in centimeters unless the pattern specified something else.

Final measurements

The sweater has a positive ease of 7 cm. Final measurements are listed in the diagram below.

Plaid Love Sweater Diagram

Neck Line a: 19 cm (21, 22, 23)

Yoke Depth b: 26 cm (28, 30, 32)

Bust Width c: 50 cm (55, 60, 65)

Under Arm Length d: 43 cm (43, 45, 45)

For this pattern I used Love from WoolAddicts by Lang Yarns  in color Brown Grey and Ecru. This Yarn is 92% Merino Wool and 8% Nylon and Polyamide. The texture is Chainette which make it super easy to work with. Each skein has 25 grams and approximate 125 m

For each size you will approximate need:

About the stitch pattern.

For the Plaid Love Sweater the main crochet stitch we will use is single crochet. For the yoke and Sleeves and Body hem we will work in mosaic crochet technique, but we will use a variation  to make it easier and faster and to have same look on both sides of the sweater.

About Mosaic Crochet

This technique gives you the opportunity to crochet two color patterns without changing yarn in one row or round. You simple can connect rows or rounds by skipping a stitch and “filling” the skipped stitch with a double crochet 2 rows or rounds later with the alternate colored yarn.

Before start to work with this technique, you have to learn first how to read a mosaic crochet chart.

A mosaic chart will look something like this:

  • The Pattern  is crocheted from bottom to top and from right to left.
  • Every chart row represents two crochet rows in the same color.
  • Usually the mosaic is worked with 2 different colors
  • Each square represents one stitch. If a Yarn B stitch appears in a Yarn A row you chain 1 and skip the stitch. Same when a yarn A square appears in a Yarn B row. Later you will “fill” the skipped space with a double crochet
  • Second round is always: one sc in every sc and dc, a chain 1 over every chain 1.
  • Color changes are done in the last stitch of the row or round with two loops on hook.
  • First chain in a row or round does not count as stitch.

The differences between mosaic crochet in general and the technique we are using in this pattern are:

  • Chain 1, instead of 2 when a color B appears in a color A row and vice – versa
  • When we are “filling” the skipped space we are doing a regular dc in the skipped stitch 2 rows below, around the chain. In mosaic crochet you have to make a “mosaic double crochet” which is a double crochet made in the same skipped stitch 2 rows below, but in front of the chain.

Abbreviations used in this pattern

  • Ch – chain
  • Sc – Single crochet
  • St(s) – stitch(es)
  • Dec – Decrease (sc2tog – 2 sc worked together)
  • RS – right side
  • WS – wrong side

Gauge

19 sc – 10 cm (4”)

21 rows – 10 cm (4”)

*in single crochet

Pattern

Pattern Notes

We will increase only on the rounds worked on the RS

Starting with round 3 stitches before increase:

  • S – 4 sts
  • M – 5 sts
  • L – 6 sts
  • XL – 7 sts

The Increase Pattern for each size will be:

( Increase Round 3) Inc R3

  • S – 1 sc in next 4, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 4
  • M – 1 sc in next 5, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 5
  • L – 1 sc in next 6, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 6
  • XL – 1 sc in next 7, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 7

With each increasing round, increase with 1 sc before the 3 sc made in the same st and after:

In this way, when completing one set of the pattern, meaning first 14 rounds, on round 13 the inc pattern will be:

  • S – 1 sc in next 9, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 9
  • M – 1 sc in next 10, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 10
  • L – 1 sc in next 11, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 11
  • XL – 1 sc in next 12, 3 sc in next, 1 sc in next 12

The pattern will specify Inc R3, Inc R4 ….and you will have to make the number of sts before the 3sc in the same st as required.

For the entire yoke and sleeves and body hem, you will have one stitch pattern repeat for each color.

Stitch Pattern Section represent only one section of the Stitch Pattern that is repeated one more time.

Stitch Pattern Repeat color A (StPatt A)

[(1 dc in the skipped st 2 rows below, ch 1 skip 1) x 3 times, 1 dc in the next skipped st 2 rows below, 1 sc in next 5 sts]

Stitch Pattern section color A (StPattSec A)

[(1 dc in the skipped st 2 rows below, ch 1 skip 1) x 3 times, 1 dc in the next skipped st 2 rows below

Stitch Pattern Repeat Color B (StPatt B)

[ (ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in the next skipped st 2 rounds below) x 3 times, ch 1 skip 1, 1 sc in next 5 sts]

Stitch Patter Section Color B (StPattSec B)

(ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in the next skipped st 2 rounds below) x 3 times, ch 1 skip 1

When the pattern specifies the abbreviations StPatt A or B or StPattSec A or B, you will have to work the pattern written above.

Ch 1 at the beginning of each round, is not consider first sc. On every round work the first sc in the sl st.

After each set of rounds, you will cut both yarns, and start next round joining the yarn where you will have a solid section of the pattern (5 sc). In the pattern this will be with every set, the first solid section before the first corner.

We will have in total for the yoke 4 sets of pattern rounds. Each set will have 12 rounds, except the first one which have 14.

With each set, the StPatt A or B will be repeated one more time on each side of the sweater (back, front, sleeves)

Yoke

For the yoke you can follow the chart or the written pattern.

This chart is for sizes Small. With every bigger size increase with 1 more sc before and after corner increase

Foundation Round

Start with color A and make the foundation chain:

  • S – 104 sts
  • M – 112 sts
  • L – 120 sts
  • XL – 128 sts

Join to make a circle.

Round 1

*for sizes M, L, XL the numbers are written between ( ).

After finishing the first set of rounds, we will cut both yarns, just to start in a solid section (where we are making 5 sc on each round)

Round 15

RS

Start with yarn B and join the yarn in the 4th st of the first square with dc’s before corner.

The pattern is now repeated from round 3, only that the StPatt will be repeated one more time.

Ch 1, 1 sc in first 3 sts, StPattSec B, Inc R3,  StPatt B x1, StPattSec B, Inc R3, StPatt B x 3 times, StPattSec B, Inc R3, StPatt B, StPattSec B, Inc R3, StPatt B x 2, StPattSec B, 1 sc in last 2 sts. Sl st with 1st sc, ch 1 and turn.

Round 16

Make 1 sc over each sc and dc and ch 1 over each ch 1. Join with a sl st using yarn A. Ch 1 and turn. Round without increasing.

Round 17

Round 20

Make 1 sc over each sc and dc and ch 1 over each ch 1. Join with a sl st using yarn B. Ch 1 and turn. Round without increasing.

Round 21

Repeat round 17, but make Inc R9.

Round 22

Make 1 sc over each sc and dc and ch 1 over each ch 1. Join with a sl st using yarn A. Ch 1 and turn. Round without increasing.

Round 23

Repeat round 15, but making Inc R11.

Round 24

Make 1 sc over each sc and dc and ch 1 over each ch 1. Join with a sl st using yarn B. Ch 1 and turn. Round without increasing.

Round 25

RS

On round 25 we will proceed the same as round 13. The StPatt is changing from ch 1, skip 1, into 1 sc. So, you will work, sc over sc, dc 2 rows below over ch 1. On this round you are not skipping any sts.

Make Inc R13 in corners.

Round 26

WS

1 sc in each st around.

After round 26 we completed another set of rounds and we will cut the both yarns again.

We will work 2 more sets of 12 rounds. The pattern will be the same.

Start the first round of the 3rd set, or round 27 by repeating round 15 only that you will have with 1 StPatt more on each section of the sweater. You will have 4 repeats on back and front and 2 repeats on sleeves.

On the last set of rounds, you will have 5 repeats on back and front and 3 repeats on sleeves.

After completing  4 sets you will have in total 50 rounds.

For size Small, round 50 is the last round of the yoke and you will have to move forward to the separating round.

For sizes Small, Medium and X Large you will have to work a few more rounds on the yoke just in color B. Keep increasing in the 2nd st of the corners the same, only on the RS rounds.

So, cut the color A and starting on the RS  work:

  • M – 4 more rounds
  • L – 8 rounds
  • XL – 12 rounds

Next, we will divide the yoke for sleeves and body:

Body

Round 1 (Separating round)

*numbers for sizes M, L and XL are written between ( )

1 sc in each st, to the 2nd st of the first corner, 1 sc in the 2nd st of the corner, ch 7 (7, 13, 13), skip the sts for the sleeve and in the 2nd st of the 2nd corner make 1 sc. Continue with 1 sc in each st to the 3rd corner. Make 1 sc in the 2nd st of the 3rd corner, ch 7 (7, 13, 13), skip the sts for the sleeve, 1 sc in the 2nd st of the 4th corner. Continue with 1 sc in each st to the end of the round. Join with a sl st with 1st sc. Ch 1 and turn.

After separating round, you will have in total for the body (counting the underarm chai as well)

  • S – 96 sts
  • M – 102 sts
  • L – 114 sts
  • XL – 120 sts

If you don’t have the same number of sts, adjust that on the next rounds because for the end part of the body you will need a multiple of 12 sts for the pattern to work.

Round 2

1 sc in each st around.

Round 3 – 50

Repeat round 1

Next we will make 2 sets of rounds in the stitch pattern used for the yoke. At the end of round 49, join with a sl st using yarn A, ch 1 and turn.

Round 51 – 52 (color A)

Repeat round 2 (1 sc in each st around). At the end of round 52, join with a sl st using color B.

Round 53 (color B)

1 sc in first 3 sts, [ch 1, skip 1, (1sc in next, ch 1, skip 1) X 3 times, 1 sc in next 5 sts]. Repeat to the end of the round. Finsh the round with ch 1, skip 1, 1 sc in last 2 sts. Ch 1 and turn.

Round 54 (color B)

1 sc on the top of each sc, ch 1 on the top of each ch 1. Change to color A, ch 1, and turn.

Round 55 (color A)

1 sc in first 3 sts, StPatt A to the end of the round. Finish the round with 1 sc in last 2 sts.

Rounds 56 (color A)

1 sc on top of each sc and dc and ch 1 on top of ch 1. Change to color B, ch 1 and turn

Round 57 (color B)

1 sc in first 3 sts, StPatt B to the end of the round. Ch 1 and turn.

Round 58 (color B)

1 sc on the top of each sc and dc and ch 1 over each ch 1. Change to color A, ch 1 and turn.

Rounds 59 – 62

Repeat rounds 55 – 58.

Round 63

Because we are about to finish one set of pattern rounds. The same as we did on the yoke, we are changing the st pattern just by making 1 sc instead of ch 1.

1 sc in first 3 sts, [1 dc 2 round below, (1 sc, 1 dc 2 rounds bellow) X 3 times, 1 sc in next 5 sts]. Repeat to the end of the round. Ch 1 and turn.

Round 64

1 sc in each st arounds.

Cut both colors, and the same as we did for the yoke, after completing one set of rounds from the st pattern, we are starting our next set with a solid section of the stitch pattern repeat.

Start next round over one section with dc’s and repeat rounds 53 to 64.

After finishing the body of the sweater, we will add and ribbed edge.  Move forward to the edge section of this pattern.

Sleeves

Round 1 (color B)

1 sc in each st around. Ch 1 and turn.

Starting with round 2 we will have a decrease pattern for the next rounds:

S -1 round dec 1 st at the beginning and at the end of the round, 3 rounds without decrease.

M, L and XL – 1 round with decreases, 2 rounds without.

You will have to repeat the decrease pattern until you have in total:

  • S – 49 rounds
  • M – 46 rounds
  • L – 46 rounds
  • XL – 54 rounds

We will finish the sleeve hem the same as the body of the sweater, with 2 sets of rounds from the plaid pattern. But before that we will make some more t rounds without decreasing in the same color B to make sure we will get to the needed length of the sleeve.

  • S – 2 more rounds without decreasing
  • M – 4 more rounds without decreasing
  • L – 8 more rounds
  • XL – 2 more rounds

Next 26 rounds will be made repeating the same pattern as for the body hem. Before starting the plaid stitch pattern, make sure you have a multiple of 12 sts.  For size Small and medium you should have 48 sts, and for sizes Large and 1X Large, 60 sts.

To finish the sleeve, we will add a cuff in a ribbed pattern, the same pattern that we will be using on the hem’s sweater and collar.

Ribbed edging

In color A

Ch 16

Row 1: 1 sl st in each st, 2 sl sts in the next 2 sts from the hem of the sleeve or of the sweater. Turn

Row 2: 1 sl st only in the back loop to the end of the row. Ch 1 and turn.

Row 3: 1 sl st in the back loop only in each st, 2 sl sts in the next 2 sts of the hem. Turn

Next, repeat rows 2 and 3 until you complete the entire circumference of the sleeves or body of the sweater. Join the ends with sl sts or you can sew them.

Collar

For the collar we will use the same ribbed pattern as for the cuffs and hem.

Instead of 16, ch 51 and repeat the same pattern with sl sts only in the back loop.

To finish

Wave in all ends and block it to measurements if needed.
