Bishop Sweater started with the yarn and a stitch pattern I wanted to use for something. I had totally something else in my head, but as almost all of the times I changed my mind while I was working on it.

I started with a few swatches using different hook sizes, because believing it or not, not always the recommended one matches your design idea. I had to try different sizes so the final crocheted fabric to be as I wanted.

At first, I was thinking to make this sweater in one single color, but the idea of the squares on the front panel came right when I was about to finish the front panel.

I am not a fan of seaming pieces together, but since I learned to have patience with each step of the making process, I found out that seaming is not that bad.

Now about the name 😁 Bishop is the chess piece that can be moved in a diagonal and this “white and black” pattern took me to the chess board right after trying it on. And here is how I chose the name.

If you are not in love with neutral colors, I just draw some sketches using different color combinations to have them as inspiration

This pattern is written for women sizes from size Small up to 5XL and for Men sizes from Small up to 2XL.

Now, let’s see what we will need and how we can make the Bishop Pullover:

PS: I have some strange poses while photo shooting this Bishop Pullover because I was trying to hide my swollen cheek after a Dental Intervention  😁

MATERIALS

  • Yarn
    • Category 4 ( worsted, aran)
  • Crochet hook
    • 8 mm
  • You will need a yarn needle for wave in ends and assembling
  • Scissors
  • stitch markers

  ABOUT DESIGN

This Bishop Sweater uses techniques as herringbone single crochet, slip stitch in the back loop only, Intasia color work.

The sweater is worked in 4 panels: back, front and sleeves, which are then assembled together.

The sweater construction is perpendicular, the number of stitches is giving the length and the number of rows is giving the width.

Cuffs ribbing and bottom hem ribbing are worked in the same rows. The neckline ribbing is added at the end, after assembling.

This sweater has an oversized fit with a positive ease of about 20 cm around the bust circumference.

If you will like a closer fit, just work fewer rows on the back and front panels

STITCH PATTERN

The Bishop Sweater is worked using Herringbone Single Crochet and Slip Stitch in the back loop only for ribbing

Herringbone Single Crochet

Here you can find the step by step video tutorial for this sweater and you can see how the herringbone single crochet is worked.

First row is worked into the 3rd loop of the chain.

Row 1 (right side row) 1 sc in the first st, *insert the hook into the last loop of the previous sc you just made, then insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull out a loop, Yarn over and pull the yarn through all loops on your hook. *Repeat to the end of the row.

Row 2 (wrong side row)

*all the stitches on the wrong side row, are worked from back to front.

Insert the hook into the first stitch, from back to front, yarn over and pull out a loop, yarn over and pull the yarn through all loops on your hook (first single crochet made from back to front)

*Insert the hook into the last loop of the previous single crochet (it’s on the back of your work), then insert the hook into the next stitch, from back to front, yarn over and pull out a loop, yarn over and pull it through all loops on your hook.

Repeat to the end of the row.

For this particular pullover pattern, each right side row ends up with a few stitches worked in the slip stitch in back loop only stitch pattern. Of course, the wrong side row will start with the stitches worked in slip stitches in back loop only.

Slip Stitch in back loop only

Insert the hook into the back loop of the next available stitch, yarn over pull out a loop, then pull the loop through the loop on your hook.

Repeat to the end of the row or as many times as pattern requires.

PATTERN NOTES

Ch 1 to turn your work

Ch 1 at the beginning of each row, doesn’t count as a first st.

On the front panel, when working with 2 different colors, use 2 different balls for the main color, one for each section.

When changing the color, insert the hook through the last loop of your previous hsc, then through the next st (which will be the last st worked in the current color), yarn over with the second color and pull out a loop, yarn over and finish the stitch.

When changing colors on the RS rows, leave the previous color strand behind your work and move the ball from left to right. On the WS rows, bring the previous color strand in front of your work and move the ball from left to right.
