I had this yarn for some time and used it to exercise different kind of stitches. Then I realised that I can do something with it and designed this Jeanie overall skirt for my daughter.

Here are the materials you will need:

I used Stylecraft “Jeanie”, for the Jeanie look but you can use any kind of medium weight yarn.

The approximate quantities of yarn for each age are:

  • 12 months – approximate 130 gr (280 m/300 yd)
  • 18 months – approximate 150gr (315 m/345yd)
  • 2 years – approximate 150 gr (315 m/345yd)
  • 4 years – approximate 170 gr (350 m/380 yd)
  • 6 years – approximate 200 gr (420 m/460 yd)
  • 8 years – approximate 230 gr ( 490 m/600 yd)
  • 10 years – approximate 270 gr (570 m/620)

You will also need

  • Crochet hook size H / 5 mm
  • 2 closures for jeans
  • 4 buttons for jeans
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • Some amount of a thinner yarn in another color and the proper hook for the edge.

The stitch I used is herringbone half double crochet.

Gauge

13 stitches and 12 rows for a 10 cm/4 in square

Front side

Make the foundation chain of:

  • 12 months 36 stitches
  • 18 months – 38 stitches
  • 2 years – 40 stitches
  • 4 years – 42 stitches
  • 6 years – 45 stitches
  • 8 years – 50 stitches
  • 10 years – 52 stitches

Row 1

Chain 1 stitch more and beginning with the second stitch, yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over and pull the yarn trough the stitch and the first loop of the hook. Now you have 2 loops. Yarn over again and pull the yarn trough the both loops from the hook.

This is the herringbone half double crochet (HBHDC)

Continue with 1 HBHDC in each stitch to the end of the row. Chain 1 and turn.

Repeat row 1 for:

  • 12 months – 17 rows (18 rows in total)
  • 18 months – 19 rows ( 20 rows in total)
  • 2 years – 19 rows ( 20 rows in total)
  • 4 years – 23 rows ( 24 rows)
  • 6 years – 33 rows ( 34 rows)
  • 8 years – 37 rows ( 38 rows)
  • 10 years – 39 rows ( 40 rows)

If you want the skirt to be shorter or longer make less or more rows.

beginning with age 2 we will start decreasing to shape the waist ( skip this step for 12 and 18 months because no need to shape, the hips and waist dimensions are the same)

Decrease with 1 stitch/row ( at the beginning of each row) for:

  • 2 years – 2 rows (in total 22 rows); 38 stitches left
  • 4 years – 3 rows (in total 27 rows); 39 stitches left
  • 6 years – 4 rows (in total 38 rows); 41 stitches left
  • 8 years – 7 rows ( in total 45 rows); 43 stitches left
  • 10 years – 8 rows (in total 49 rows); 46 stitches left

We will make now a waist band.

For all sizes.

4 rows in single crochet. On row 2 we will make 2 buttons holes, one in each side like this:

2 single crochet in first 2 stitches, chain 2, skip 2 stitches and continue with 1 single crochet in each stitch until 4 stitches left. Then make another button-hole.

After finishing the waist band we will have:

  • 12 months – 22 rows
  • 18 months – 24 rows
  • 2 years – 26 rows
  • 4 years – 31 rows
  • 6 years – 42 rows
  • 8 years – 49 rows
  • 10 years – 53 rows

Top part of the front side

Decrease with 1 stitch/row, at every beginning of the row for:

  • 12 months – 16 rows – in total 38 rows
  • 18 months – 17 rows – in total 41 rows
  • 2 years – 18 rows – in total 44 rows
  • 4 years – 21 rows – in total 52 rows
  • 6 years – 28 rows – in total 70 rows
  • 8 years – 32 rows – in total 81 rows
  • 10 years – 34 rows – in total 87 rows

And the front side is done.

Back side

Follow the same pattern as for the front side until you finished the waist band.

  • 12 months – 22 rows
  • 18 months – 24 rows
  • 2 years – 26 rows
  • 4 years – 31 rows
  • 6 years – 42 rows
  • 8 years – 49 rows
  • 10 years – 53 rows

Beginning with row 23 (25, 27,32, 43, 50, 54) we will make the top part of the back side following the next pattern.

Decrease with 2 stitches on each side (at the beginning and at the end of the row for 5 rows. For all sizes.

Decrease with 1 stitch on each side ( at the beginning and at the end of the row) for:

  • 12 months – rows 28-30 (3 rows)
  • 18 months – rows 30-33 (4 rows)
  • 2 years – rows 32-35 (4 rows)
  • 4 years – rows 37-39 (3 rows)
  • 6 years – rows 48-52 (5 rows)
  • 8 years – rows 55-59 (5 rows)
  • 10 years – rows 59-63 (5 rows)

Decrease with 1 stitch/row, at every beginning of the row for:

  • 12 months – rows 31-32 (2 rows)
  • 18 months – rows 34-36 (3 rows)
  • 2 years – rows 36-38 (3 rows)
  • 4 years – rows 50-52 (3 rows)
  • 6 years – rows 53-55 (3 rows)
  • 8 years – rows 60-63 (4 rows)
  • 10 years – rows 64-69 (6 rows)

Stitches left after finished decreasing:

  • 12 month – 8 stitches
  • 18 months – 9 stitches
  • 2 years – 9 stitches
  • 4 years – 9 stitches
  • 6 years – 8 stitches
  • 8 years – 8 stitches
  • 10 years – 8 stitches

After finished decreasing make a square and attach it on the top of the back side. For square chain the same number of stitches as the one left after decreasing.

We will make also 2 edges to insert the buttons.

Insert the yarn in the last row of the waist band (this will be the first stitch). Now make another 7 stitches, 8 in total on the side of the back side in bottom direction. Make 4 rows.

Now sew the back and the front side but only until the button edges.

Now is time for braces.

Pay attention on the closures dimension because this will be the width of the braces. I had 2.5  cm closures and was equal with 3 stitches.

So I began the brace with  stitches. Insert the yarn in second stitch if the square side. Make 6 double crochet. Beginning with row 2 decrease with 1 stitch/row until you have left 3 stitches. Then continue as many rows as you want depending on how long you want your braces to be. I made 35 rows in total.

Now is time for details.

Add the closures and the buttons. I also made a pocket on the front side. Just in single crochet with a chain of 15 stitches.

At the end with a thinner yarn, I made an edge on the pocket, bottom, the sides of back and front and also on braces. Choose a lighter yarn just to obtain this jeans look.

And this is it.
